The Sunday Times bestseller 'One of the strongest and most affecting works in Allende's long career' New York Times Book Review 'A defiantly warm and funny novel, by somebody who has earned the right to argue that love and optimism can survive whatever history might throw at us' Daily Telegraph September 3, 1939, the day of the Spanish exiles' splendid arrival in Chile, the Second World War broke out in Europe. Victor Dalmau is a young doctor when he is caught up in the Spanish Civil War, a tragedy that leaves his life – and the fate of his country – forever changed. Together with his sister-in-law, the pianist Roser, he is forced out of his beloved Barcelona and into exile. When opportunity to seek refuge arises, they board a ship chartered by the poet Pablo Neruda to Chile, the promised 'long petal of sea and wine and snow'. There, they find themselves enmeshed in a rich web of characters who come together in love and tragedy over the course of four generations, destined to witness the battle between freedom and repression as it plays out across the world. A masterful work of historical fiction that soars from the Spanish Civil War to the rise and fall of Pinochet, A Long Petal of the Sea is Isabel Allende at the height of her powers. 'An epic that starts in 1939 and spans decades and continents . . . A masterful work of historical fiction about hope, exile and belonging, and one that sheds light on the way we live now' Independent.co.uk 'Full of ambition and humanity' Sunday Times 'Allende knows that all stories are love stories, and the greatest love stories are told by time' Colum McCann 'Allende's style is impressively Olympian and the payoff is remarkable' Guardian 'Epic in scope, yet intimate in execution' i

BOOK EXCERPT:
First and foremost, I would like to thank you for reading My book. It is my hope that as you read you will find at least one chapter that speaks to you in such a way that you will want to read it again and again, and perhaps share it with my friends. I have written these chapters primarily for sailors or those interested in sailing. I hope however, that the selections of the points or ideas within this book might be enjoyed by many others who simply have an interest in, and a love for Book. My style is simple and unsophisticated. If you are an acute student of writing who counts syllables and study rhyme and meter, my ideas will probably be a disappointment to you. If, however, you read book simply for enjoyment and relaxation, thenmy book may speak to you in a special way and give you hours of pleasure. For it is this reason I write this book. I like to say my ideas of sailors and my love for sailor is nothing more than a story that rhymes… hopefully! It is my wish that my straight-forward and easy to read style is refreshing, and appeals to your taste. It has been my experience that many times it is helpful to understand what was going on in the sailors or seafarer’s life and mind of the author at the time she was writing such experiences, to better gain an appreciation of the book. With this thought in mind, each idea in the selections of this book will be preceded by a short stories and experiences by me. The commentary will give a short explanation, information, or simply set the mood for the reading. I have also added some short stories, poems about current sail ships adventures in the appendices of this book. It is my hope that the skills, as well as the stories in the appendices will add to your reading pleasure. I should mention at this time that some of my ideas reflect my faith. I think however, that these chapters will be appreciated and definitely not be found to be offensive by those persons of other faiths. It is my deep belief that we are all on our own faith journey and all are deserving of respect and reverence. Consequently, I will never intentionally write anything that would be disrespectful of any religion. As the title of this book indicates, all chapters are about sailors or sailing adventures. Many were simply conjured up from my imagination. Whether the chapters my ideas are grounded in fact or fiction, it is my hope that within these pages you will be carried away from the cares of this world to a land far away. Some of the ideas may make you sad. Some may make you laugh. Others may leave you scratching your head wondering what that was all about. Whatever your reaction, my hope is that you enjoy what you are about to read and consider the following pages my gift to you. Now find a soft comfortable chair. Throw another log on the fire. Get yourself a hot cup of tea. Open the pages of this book and prepare to let your imagination carry you away.
