BOOK EXCERPT:
Many have called the psalms a ‘school of prayer’ and indeed St. Augustine in his Confessions wrote that the psalms could be a stepping stone to deeper conversation with God. These ancient words from Scripture mirror our own thoughts and emotions—celebration and praise, suffering and lament, gratitude and asking for help—as relevant today as when they were first sung in the Temple. Fr. Martin Shannon brings deep teaching as well as the personal encounter of someone who has chanted and studied the Psalms for years. Each reflection is on one psalm, offering a meditation on its meaning and how it connects to our lives, followed by a word from one of the ancient church fathers and a prayer. There is a reflection for each of the forty-seven days from Ash Wednesday to Easter that reflect the various twists and turns on the Lenten journey. Readers will discover the power of the psalms to inspire their own Lenten journey towards Easter.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Because there is no single word that translates the Hebrew word hesed and the Greek word eleos, multiple words are used in English biblical translations. Mercy is the most frequently used word in English, but forgiveness, generosity, pity, and others are also used. Using 106 biblical texts gathered from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), the Old Testament Apocrypha, and the Christian Bible (New Testament), a representative sample of the various ways hesed and eleos are translated is presented in this book. Each entry consists of a short title, a few verses of Scripture, a reflection, a psalm response, a meditation/journal question, and a concluding prayer. The purpose of the book is to assist the reader’s development of spirituality, a deeper knowledge of divine mercy, meditation on how he or she has experienced it, and a closer relationship with God.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Author Harvey Marshall gleaned great thoughts, ideas, and inspiration while reading the Bible, and he wanted to share what he found with others. At first, he texted the encouraging words he learned by cell phone. Then, he sent them via e-mail, and finally he created a website with which to share the good news. In Promises to Confess to, Marshall shares these lessons, gleaned from Scripture readings, and discusses the meanings behind the encouraging words and the promises from God that are a part of the Bibles message. He follows each short inspiration with a confession or prayer that relates to the discussion. Promises to Confess to provides a lens through which to look at God and to appreciate the many colors that his glory has allowed to fall upon the earth.

BOOK EXCERPT:
What should Christians expect of each other? Can a Christian judge another Christian? How should we give correction? This book draws on the wealth of insight from Scripture, Christian tradition, secular authorities, and the experience of modern Christian communities to portray an open, trusting, loyal attitude that is vulnerable and compassionate as a foundation to build strong relationships. The author's analysis includes the thought of the Desert Fathers, Thomas Aquinas, and Bernard Lonergan to understand the problems that stifle relationships.
