What knowledge and tools do pre- and in-service educators need to teach for and about social justice across the curriculum in K-12 classrooms? This compelling text synthesizes in one volume historical foundations, philosophic/theoretical conceptualizations, and applications of social justice education in public school classrooms. Part one details the history of the multicultural movement and the instantiation of public schooling as a social justice project. Part two connects theoretical frameworks to social justice curricula. Parts I and II are general to all K-12 classrooms. Part three provides powerful specific subject-area examples of good practice, including English as a Second Language and Special/ Exceptional Education Social Justice Pedagogy Across the Curriculum includes highlighted 'Points of Inquiry' and 'Points of Praxi's sections offering recommendations to teachers and researchers and activities, resources, and suggested readings. These features invite teachers at all stages of their careers to reflect on the role of social justice in education, particularly as it relates to their particular classrooms, schools, and communities. Relevant for any course that addresses history, theory, or practice of multicultural/social justice education, this text is ideal for classes that are not subject-level specific and serve a host of students from various backgrounds.

This book is about the sensuous, living body without which individual knowing and learning is impossible. It is the interface between the individual and culture. Recent scholarship has moved from investigated knowing and learning as something in the mind or brain to understanding these phenomena in terms of the body (embodiment literature) or culture (social constructivism). These two literatures have expanded the understanding of cognition to include the role of the body in shaping the mind and to recognize the tight relation between mind and culture. However, there are numerous problems arising from ways in which the body and culture are thought in these separate research domains. In this book, the authors present an interdisciplinary, scientific initiative that brings together the concerns for body and for culture to develop a single theory of cognition centered on the living and lived body. This book thereby contributes to bridging the gap that currently exists between theory (knowing that) and praxis (knowing how) that is apparent in the existing science and mathematics education literatures.

Shamos argues that a meaningful scientific literacy cannot be achieved in the first place, and the attempt is a misuse of human resources on a grand scale. He is skeptical about forecasts of "critical shortfalls in scientific manpower" and about the motives behind crash programs to get more young people into the science pipeline.

Literacy is at the heart of all social concerns. Not only in childhood, in education, in Britain, but everywhere in the modern world of signs, print and information, literacy is linked to changes, especially in all forms of communication. So what are children to learn about reading and writing? What counts as literacy now, and what will it be like in the lives of those who leave school in the next century? In this book Margaret Meek shows how young learners become strong, confident readers if they discover early what reading and writing are good for, as powerful ways of learning and 'being in the know.' Literacy will change, but it is still the entitlement of everyone.
