Education Religion And Ethics A Scholarly Collection

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This collection draws on research in educational areas displaying best practice pedagogy, theoretical and practical, underpinned by philosophy, empirical science, and neuroscience, among other disciplines. It focusses especially on implications for higher education, school education, professional ethics, and religion. Higher education exploration is on the diminution of the humanities and implications for the range of knowledge needed for future citizenship. The work includes a revisioning of higher education’s purpose, especially the changing role of the doctorate and its examination. The focus on school education takes the same pedagogical lens to humanities and social sciences, examining values education and religious studies. Ethical issues include colonisation and decolonisation, especially around the concept of land and ramifications for intercultural studies. The ethics and practice of teaching about life and death issues in medical education are explored in light of research in dialogic consensus. The religion section includes research on interfaith education, especially concerning Islam, and eco-theological education, especially focussed on climate change. Contributors are academic colleagues or former doctoral students of Terence J. Lovat (University Professor, Australia, UK, and Canada) whose internationally acclaimed research straddles these areas. Many of the contributors hold positions of influence in the academic or professional world, while others bring their newly minted doctoral research to the content. The intended readership includes academics and doctoral students across education, ethics, religion, social studies, ecology, health and medicine, indigenous studies, and international affairs. This collection, published in honour of Emeritus Professor Terence Lovat, provides rich insights into the scope and multidisciplinary depth of his scholarship. A philosopher of education whose main work has centred on curriculum theory and values education and ethics in education, Lovat’s scholarship reminds us that the education of children and young people must be concerned with more than academic attainment. In emphasising education as a holistic and moral endeavour—one involving hearts and minds—Lovat has consistently advocated for the provision of opportunities for young people to extend their horizons beyond the school environment to engage with issues in society that go beyond academic learning. Professor Lovat has also made a major and longstanding contribution to the development of Studies of Religion in schools and to the theology and history of Islam and Islamic Education. In traversing Lovat’s significant and remarkable contributions to education, religion and ethics, and the links between them, this book serves as a testament to a highly esteemed scholar. Associate Professor Deborah Henderson, Queensland University of Technology, Australia

Second International Research Handbook On Values Education And Student Wellbeing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This collection applies the principles underlying values education to addressing the many social and learning challenges that impinge on education today . Insights in the fields of social and emotional learning, student wellbeing, and, increasingly, educational neuroscience have demonstrated that values education represents an efficacious pedagogy with holistic effects on students across a range of measures, including social, emotional, and intellectual outcomes. With schools in the 21st century confronting issues such as gender identity, stemming radicalism, mental health, equity for disadvantaged groups, bullying, respect, and the meaning of consent, values education offers a way of teaching and learning that integrates and enhances student’s affective and cognitive functioning. The earlier edition of this book has become a standard reference for scholars and practitioners in the fields of values education, moral education, and character education. Its citation rates, reads and downloads have been consistently and enduringly high, as have those of its companion text, Values Pedagogy and Student Achievement. A decade on, the main purpose of the revised edition is to update and incorporate new research and practice relevant to values education. Recent insights in the fields of neuroscience and social and emotional learning and their implications for education and student wellbeing are more overt than they were when the first edition was being compiled. Additionally, advanced thinking in the field of epistemology, how humans come to know and therefore learn, has also sharpened, especially through the later writings of prominent scholars like Jurgen Habermas. The revised edition has preserved the essential spirit and thrust of the original edition while making space for some of these new insights about the potential of values education to establish optimal and harmonious learning and social environments for both students and teachers.

Doctoral Supervision And Research Culture

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Drawing on original survey data, reflective accounts, and case studies of supervisory practice in different disciplines, Doctoral Supervision and Research Culture explores the supervisor experience and demonstrates the craft, compassion and consistency required of supervisors in responding to different researcher’s needs. Based on empirical data and using the voice of research supervisors, the authors throw a spotlight on the challenges and opportunities supervisors face in supporting doctoral researchers through to successful PhD completion. This book acts as an invitation to institutions, funders, industry and academics to review what, and how they support PhD provision and to elevate the status of supervision practice. It shows how research cultures - disciplinary, institutional and individual - affect the supervisory experience and highlight the challenges that supervisors face, as well as the rewards that successful supervisory relationships bring. It is also a celebration of the contribution that doctoral researchers and all those who support research make to society. Designed to provide opportunities for sharing of practice across disciplines and the sector, Doctoral Supervision and Research Culture will be of interest to both new and experienced supervisors, to staff and researcher developers in institutions, and to funders, policy makers and senior management in universities who seek to improve and enhance the supervisory experience for all agents.

The Politics And Practice Of Religious Diversity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Politics and Practice of Religious Diversity engages with one of the most characteristic features of modern society. An increasingly prominent and potentially contentious phenomenon, religious diversity is intimately associated with contemporary issues such as migration, human rights, social cohesion, socio-cultural pluralisation, political jurisdiction, globalisation, and reactionary belief systems. This edited collection of specially-commissioned chapters provides an unrivalled geographical coverage and multidisciplinary treatment of the socio-political processes and institutional practices provoked by, and associated with, religious diversity. Alongside chapters treating religious diversity in the ‘BRIC’ countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China, are contributions which discuss Australia, Finland, Mexico, South Africa, the UK, and the United States. This book provides an accessible, distinctive and timely treatment of a topic which is inextricably linked with modern society’s progressively diverse and global trajectory. Written and structured as an accessible volume for the student reader, this book is of immediate interest to both academics and laypersons working in mainstream and political sociology, sociology of religion, human geography, politics, area studies, migration studies and religious studies.

Multi Religious Perspectives On A Global Ethic

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Ratified by the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 1993 and expanded in 2018, "Towards a Global Ethic (An Initial Declaration)," or the Global Ethic, expresses the minimal set of principles shared by people—religious or not. Though it is a secular document, the Global Ethic emerged after months of collaborative, interreligious dialogue dedicated to identifying a common ethical framework. This volume tests and contests the claim that the Global Ethic’s ethical directives can be found in the world’s religious, spiritual, and cultural traditions. The book features essays by scholars of religion who grapple with the practical implications of the Global Ethic’s directives when applied to issues like women’s rights, displaced peoples, income and wealth inequality, India’s caste system, and more. The scholars explore their respective religious traditions’ ethical response to one or more of these issues and compares them to the ethical response elaborated by the Global Ethic. The traditions included are Hinduism, Engaged Buddhism, Shi‘i Islam, Sunni Islam, Confucianism, Protestantism, Catholicism, Judaism, Indigenous African Religions, and Human Rights. To highlight the complexities within traditions, most essays are followed by a brief response by an expert in the same tradition. Multi-Religious Perspectives on a Global Ethic is of special interest to advanced students and scholars whose work focuses on the religious traditions listed above, on comparative religion, religious ethics, comparative ethics, and common morality.

Religion In Secular Education

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Cathy Byrne presents the secular principle as a guiding compass for religion in government schools in plural democracies. Using in-depth case studies, historical and contextual research from Australia, and comparisons with other developed nations, Religion in Secular Education provides a comprehensive, at times confronting, analysis of the ideologies, policies, pedagogies, and practices for state-school religion. In the context of rising demands for students to develop intercultural competence and interreligious literacy, and alongside increasing Christian evangelism in the public arena, this book highlights risks and implications as education develops religious identity – in individual children and in nation states. Byrne proposes a best practice framework for nations attempting to navigate towards socially inclusive outcomes and critical thinking in religions education policy.
