This report includes a list of books and Internet sources that may help locate student financial aid information for prospective, current, or graduating college and university students. This list includes both general and comprehensive works, as well as ones targeted toward specific types of aid and circumstances (e.g., non-need-based scholarships; female and minority students; students studying abroad; or veterans, military personnel, and their dependents). When possible, the summer release dates for 2012 publications are included as a tool for those doing early planning. Many of the websites listed enable a student to conduct and save general and individualized scholarship, grant, and loan searches on a variety of issues, including intended area of study. Some of these listed resources also contain information on repaying, forgiving, decreasing, or discharging incurred educational financial debt through a variety of options, such as employment in certain professions or localities. This document presents testimony and prepared statements concerning the lack of information about educational and career opportunities for young people beyond high school, and the need for improving access to student financial aid information so that economically disadvantaged students have the opportunity to go on to higher education. Also included in the document is a U.S. Department of Education publication called "The Key to the Future," that provides information to assist those interested in seeking student aid, including how to get it, what's available, and general information on the department's Student Aid process. Angelina Schoefer grew up in Iran under the stable government of the Shah, then was forced to endure life through the turmoil of the political and cultural revolution that followed. The Iranian revolution shook the country to its core, bringing the ayatollahs to power. Determined to get an education, she endured the hardship and havoc caused during the revolution. Angelina continued to improve herself. In the face of all the handicaps she managed to become a school principal and a district supervisor responsible for 12 middle schools and high schools, teaching students, teachers, and principals in various school districts. She accomplished all this while a single parent. This story shows the determination of one person overcoming impossible odds.
