The varying traditions in the migration research of different countries are closely connected to the respective national political landscape and the way in which the respective national state views itself - affirmative and positive or perhaps more self-critical. Seen side by side, much emerges to be discussed and challenged that was previously beyond doubt. The present volume introduces the reader to the traditions of migration research in twelve different countries: the more traditional immigration countries of Canada and Australia, four European countries with decades of experience (United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Netherlands), countries newer to immigration such as Italy, Poland and Japan, and finally the postcolonial countries of India, Malaysia and Nigeria. Through this comparative approach this volume presents a new approach to understanding the different research traditions. The reader is confronted with the various ways in which emigrants are included or excluded from society, thereby gaining an understanding of the existing intellectual discourses as well as learning to qualify them in the light of other solutions and traditions. Because the approaches of the respective migration research tradition are not always the same, the volume is attractive for a number of professionals: Sociologists, political scientists, ethnologists, economists, and philosophers can join together to discuss the terms migration, integration, and their relationship to social structures. This in turn challenges premises that previously were held to be a matter of course.

In this open access book, experts on integration processes, integration policies, transnationalism, and the migration and development framework provide an academic assessment of the 2011 European Agenda for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals, which calls for integration policies in the EU to involve not only immigrants and their society of settlement, but also actors in their country of origin. Moreover, a heuristic model is developed for the non-normative, analytical study of integration processes and policies based on conceptual, demographic, and historical accounts. The volume addresses three interconnected issues: What does research have to say on (the study of) integration processes in general and on the relevance of actors in origin countries in particular? What is the state of the art of the study of integration policies in Europe and the use of the concept of integration in policy formulation and practice? Does the proposal to include actors in origin countries as important players in integration policies find legitimation in empirical research? A few general conclusions are drawn. First, integration policies have developed at many levels of government: nationally, locally, regionally, and at the supra-national level of the EU. Second, a multitude of stakeholders has become involved in integration as policy designers and implementers. Finally, a logic of policymaking—and not an evidence-based scientific argument—can be said to underlie the European Commission’s redefinition of integration as a three-way process. This book will appeal to academics and policymakers at international, European, national, regional, and local levels. It will also be of interest to graduate and master-level students of political science, sociology, social anthropology, international relations, criminology, geography, and history.

Migration represents one of the key issues in both Italian and European politics, and it has triggered EU-wide debates and negotiations, alongside alarmist and often sensationalist news reporting on the activities of government, party and social movement actors. The Politics of Migration in Italy explores what happens when previously undiscussed issues become central to political agendas and are publicly debated in the mass media. Examining how political actors engage with the issue of migration in electoral campaigning, this book highlights how complex policy issues are addressed selectively by political entrepreneurs and how the responses of political actors are influenced by strategic incentives and ongoing events. This book studies the dynamics of the politicization of the immigration issue across three local contexts in Italy – Prato, Milan and Rome – which differ systematically with respect to crucial economic, cultural and security dimensions of immigration. Migrant organizations are of vital importance for countries of residence and countries of origin, but the empirical and theoretical knowledge of the cross-border character of migrant organizations remains incomplete. It is clear that migrant transnationalism challenges the governance of nation-states on the local and national levels. This book, the outcome of an ECPR joint session, systematically and empirically analyzes the differing roles that transnational migrant organizations play in their countries of residence and origin. Drawing on research conducted in Belgium, England, Germany, Holland, Poland and Portugal, it focuses on the relations between migrant organizations and the state.
