Diagnostic Molecular Pathology In Practice

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This entirely case-based book covers a broad cross-section of the practical issues frequently encountered in the day-to-day activities of a molecular genetic pathologist. The book is divided into four sections on the principal areas addressed in molecular genetic pathology (MGP): inherited diseases, hematopathology, solid tumors, and infectious diseases. The topics covered by the cases in each section include test selection, qualitative and quantitative laboratory techniques, test interpretation, prognostic and therapeutic considerations, ethical considerations, technical troubleshooting, and result reporting. This book will be ideal for trainees in MGP and clinical molecular genetics who require a practice-based preparation for board examinations. It will also be very useful for residents and fellows in medical specialties to which MGP is pertinent, and for practicing pathologists who want to learn more about the current practice of molecular diagnostics.

Firearms And Clinical Practice

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"Given that many of us (clinicians) have had relatively little or no exposure to guns on personal or professional levels, this chapter is devoted to providing a general overview of firearms and firearm-related concepts. First, we briefly review the history of guns, including their use by military and law enforcement personnel, as well as civilians. We then address the prevalence of guns in pop-culture and public sentiment associated with firearm-related issues. In the second section of this chapter, we discuss the importance of developing professional and cultural competence, including but not limited to being able to identify firearm-related subcultures and related factors that may be relevant to our patients. Lastly, we provide an overview of guns as a matter of hardware; namely, how they work, various types of guns and ammunition, and gun safety principles. Throughout the chapter, we stress the benefits of becoming familiar with gun-specific concepts, such as to facilitate rapport with certain clients and to improve clinical decision-making across the board. Indeed, this entire book has been designed with these ideals in mind. We also weave in case examples throughout the book to illustrate how various considerations may play out and to demonstrate the applicability of various firearm-related principles in our clinical practices"--

Principle Practice And The Politics Of Educational Reform In Meiji Japan

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Scholars of modern Japan agree that education played a crucial role in that country's rapid modernization during the Meiji period (1868-1912). With few exceptions, however, Western approaches to the subject treat education as an instrument of change controlled by the Meiji political and intellectual elite. Principle, Praxis, and the Politics of Educational Reform in Meiji Japan offers a corrective to this view. By introducing primary source materials (including teaching manuals, educational periodicals, and primary school textbooks) missing from most English-language works, Mark Lincicome examines an early case of resistance to government control that developed within the community of professional educators. He focuses on what began, in 1872, as an attempt by the newly established Ministry of Education to train a corps of professional teachers that could "civilize and enlighten" the masses in compulsory primary schools. Through the Tokyo Normal School and other new teacher training schools sponsored by the government, the ministry began what it thought was a straightforward "technology transfer" of the latest teaching methods and materials from the United States and Europe. Little did the ministry realize that it was planting the seeds of broader reform that would challenge not only its underlying doctrine of education, but its very authority over education. The reform movement centered around efforts to explicate and disseminate the doctrine of kaihatsushugi (developmental education). Hailed as a modern, scientific approach to child education, it rejected rote memorization and passive learning, elements of the so-called method of "pouring in" (chunyu) knowledge practiced during the preceding Tokugawa period, and sought instead to cultivate the unique, innate abilities of each child. Orthodox ideas of "education," "knowledge," and the process by which children learn were challenged. The position and responsibilities of the teacher were enhanced, consequently providing educators with a claim to professional authority and autonomy - at a time when the Meiji state was attempting to control every facet of the Japanese school system. Principle, Praxis, and the Politics of Educational Reform in Meiji Japan analyzes a key element to understanding Meiji development and modern Japan as a whole.

Practical Ethics In Architecture And Interior Design Practice

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Practical Ethics in Architecture and Interior Design Practice presents the basics of design practice through ethical scenarios, ushering design students into real-world experiential learning. Each chapter begins with a detailed story involving a complicated set of practical and ethical dilemmas, exemplifying those encountered each day in the world of professional practice. Practice-based topics such as contracts and project delivery methods, marketing design services, cross-cultural collaboration, virtual connectivity, social justice and sustainable design, soft skills, and other related professional practice themes are anchored in realistic scenarios. While all the stories are fictional, in writing them the authors drew from over seventy-five combined years of professional experience in architecture and interior design as well as many years of academic experience in teaching professional practice and ethics to architecture and interior design students. Each story is followed by discussion questions and suggested additional resources. This book provides a unique integrated perspective into the allied fields of architecture and interior design with topics relevant to both fields as well as specific to each profession. It prepares students of both disciplines for the broad issues of professional practice and encourages them to become ethical practitioners ready to contribute effectively to design teams and to ask the right questions.
