“Name it and claim it!” “Just have faith!” “Give and you will get!” Catchphrases like this have convinced many Christians that trusting in God will bring health and wealth. But the gospel does not promise prosperity without pain or salvation without sanctification. Femi Adeleye draws on his wide-ranging experience as he examines the appeal and peril of this new gospel of prosperity that has made deep inroads in Africa, as well as in the West.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book will make you certain about what the Christian message is; and what it is not. It will bring home to you the Christian messengers often under-rated responsibilities and how to readily fall on their right side. You will acquire a rational approach to accomplishing your objective as a messenger of Christ through reading this book. This book will alert you to popular errors that are quietly creeping into even the most conservative church audiences. It will teach you how to classify your church, and therefore make you see the urgent spiritual remedies required. You will understand the dynamics of how churches fare well or fail by the Lords biblically revealed yardstick. High-end spiritual poisons do take longer than one generation to gestate; so that the arrival of their ill-effects often take the new leaders in place by surprise. However, this book will show you a simple scriptural way to know spiritual poisons at first contact. Many books give dozens of steps to take in order to accomplish desirable objectives, but this one will avail you of simple, easy to remember, but often overlooked principles that will save you from deadly and pervasive hazards of preachers.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The original groundwork of the following volume consisted of an article written by me in the “Christian Remembrancer” of July, 1854, on the subject of mediæval preaching. As some persons thought that it might serve as an introduction to a kind of ecclesiastical literature, too little known and valued among us, I was requested to expand the paper in question and to give extracts at greater length and in chronological order. The chief difficulty was that of selection; partly among so many authors, principally between the various sermons of each author. In the first place, no notice will here be found of S. Bernard, because his super-eminent value and beauty would,—if any regard at all were to be paid to analogy,—have necessarily excluded the greater part of those writers from whom I wished to quote: unless the volume had been swelled to an inconvenient and unreadable size. Again, many eminent men, such as Peter the Venerable, S. Fulbert of Chartres, Hugh of S. Victor, and others, though we certainly have a few sermons of their writing, yet in that particular species of composition claimed no such eminent place as to entitle them to stand in a selection of such narrow limits. Where it was possible, I have chosen British rather than foreign writers; hence the name of Adam Scotus, who would otherwise hardly have appeared in the volume.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The focus in this book is on the historical consciousness of the Jews of Spain and southern France in the late Middle Ages, and specifically on their perceptions of Christianity and Christian history and culture. Ram Ben-Shalom offers a detailed analysis of Jews' exposure to the history of those among whom they lived. He shows that the Jews in these southern European lands experienced a relatively open society that was sensitive to and knowledgeable about voices from other cultures, and that this had significant consequences for shaping Jewish historical consciousness.
