Henchy, Principal of Burke County High School, Waynesboro, Georgia, who discusses the need for school safety; (4) Roberta Hatcher, Director of Special Education, Richmond County Board of Education, Augusta, Georgia, who discusses student support strategies; (5) Mary L. Handbook Of Special Education

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Special education is now an established part of public education in the United States—by law and by custom. However, it is still widely misunderstood and continues to be dogged by controversies related to such things as categorization, grouping, assessment, placement, funding, instruction, and a variety of legal issues. The purpose of this 13-part, 57-chapter handbook is to help profile and bring greater clarity to this sprawling and growing field. To ensure consistency across the volume, chapter authors review and integrate existing research, identify strengths and weaknesses, note gaps in the literature, and discuss implications for practice and future research. Key features include: Comprehensive Coverage—Fifty-seven chapters cover all aspects of special education in the United States including cultural and international comparisons. Issues & Trends—In addition to synthesizing empirical findings and providing a critical analysis of the status and direction of current research, chapter authors discuss issues related to practice and reflect on trends in thinking. Categorical Chapters—In order to provide a comprehensive and comparative treatment of the twelve categorical chapters in section IV, chapter authors were asked to follow a consistent outline: Definition, Causal Factors, Identification, Behavioral Characteristics, Assessment, Educational Programming, and Trends and Issues. Expertise—Edited by two of the most accomplished scholars in special education, chapter authors include a carefully chosen mixture of established and rising young stars in the field. This book is an appropriate reference volume for anyone (researchers, scholars, graduate students, practitioners, policy makers, and parents) interested in the state of special education today: its research base, current issues and practices, and future trends. It is also appropriate as a textbook for graduate level courses in special education.

School Based Mental Health

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume provides school-based practitioners with a comprehensive and comparative guide to the strategic interventions, therapeutic modalities, and treatment approaches that are most commonly and effectively used in educational settings. Three main sections of the text present a foundation of universal interventions, targeted interventions, and alternative interventions appropriate for use in schools. Unifying the chapters are two central case examples, allowing the reader to see and evaluate the strengths and potential challenges of each technique in a familiar situation. This emphasis on case examples and the comparative structure of the volume will provide a level of hands-on and practical learning that is helpful for both students and mental health practitioners working in schools for the first time, and as a resource for more seasoned professionals who need to expand the tools at their disposal.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Truly international in scope, this Handbook focuses on approaches to discipline, surveillance and social control from around the world, critically examining the strategies and practices schools employ to monitor students and control their behavior. Bringing together leading scholars from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, the chapters scrutinize, analyze and compare schools' practices across the globe, providing a critical review of existing evidence, debates and understandings, while looking forward to address emerging important questions and key policy issues. The chapters are divided into four sections. School Violence Intervention

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This work offers effective intervention strategies for managing school violence. Opening with a range of perspectives on student aggression, it provides a comprehensive view on practical interventions at the student, school, and systems levels. Practioners present empirically-grounded strategies for an array of school settings and situations, seeking to help readers make informed decisions about the approaches that would be most effective in their own environments.; The first part of the text presents information on the nature and prevalence of youth violence today, and outlines strategies geared toward making the school physically safer, establishing clear behaviour standards, providing adequate adult presence, enforcing rules fairly and sanctioning offenders, and creating partnerships with outside agencies.; The chapters that follow describe a range of interventions directed toward aggresive students themselves which have proved highly effective in outcome evaluation research. These approaches include behavioural classroom management, crises- and gang- orientated interventions, and preventative pre-school programmes. In addition, it details school-orientated strategies such as academic and curriculum interventions, vandalism control, and effective security policy. Exploring the complex relationship among school behaviour, family life, and community, chapters also consider avenues toward effecting change in the larger context of the students' lives.; A hands-on manual for dealing with some of the most intractable problems education professionals face, this book offers extensive information for school psychologists and researchers.

The Crucial Voice Of The People Past And Present

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Here is a fresh, common-sense take on education reform, not by an educator or administrator or politico, but by a concerned mother and citizen who dares to proclaim that America is NOT offering a quality education to ALL its children. Young sees an effective public education system as a fundamental function of a strong republic. Yet opposing political agendas are directing federal, state, and local lawmakers toward failed programs, wasted dollars, and poor results for American public education. In The Crucial Voice of the People, Past and Present, Young presents important insights into what can be done to “fix” America’s public education system. Her research and observations are eye opening and provide all readers with a galvanizing focus on what needs to be done and how to get there. But most importantly, the book energizes parents with new ideas and tools to improve the schools in their own communities. The Crucial Voice of the People, Past and Present is a call to the public education system to openly listen and to communities to make themselves heard.
