BOOK EXCERPT:

PLEASE NOTE: This is a summary of the book and NOT the original book. Flash Boys by Michael Lewis - A 30-Minute Instaread Summary Inside this Instaread Summary: • Overview of the entire book • Introduction to the important people in the book • Summary and analysis of all the chapters in the book • Key Takeaways of the book • A Reader's Perspective Preview of this summary: Chapter 1 In 2007, stock brokers were frustrated by the varying speed of communication between the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the data center beside the Nasdaq stock exchange in Carteret, New Jersey. A former stock broker, Dan Spivey, researched the situation and discovered that most fiber optics buried between the two cities followed train tracks and major cities. The problem lay in the fact that this route was not straight, as was ideal for speed of communication, but made many twists and turns. Spivey studied maps and found a route following small paved roads and dirt roads that were straighter. Spivey traveled the route with a construction man, looking for obstacles. They were unable to find any. Spivey founded a company with Jim Barskdale, the former CEO of Netscape Communications, called Spread Networks. Through this company they began the complicated process of laying the fiber. This included more than four hundred deals that had to be arranged with the many towns the route transected. Spivey contacted construction engineer Steve Williams, and asked him to supervise the laying of fifty miles of fiber, starting in Cleveland. Williams did such a good job, Spivey and Barskdale hired him to supervise the complete installation. Williams and Spivey disagreed on the route on many occasions. Spivey was frustrated with Williams’ attempts to avoid obstacles by deviating from the route and Williams did not understand why the straight route was so important. A full year after Spread began burying the fiber, their project remained a secret. Even their workers were kept in the dark to protect the project from being blown out of the water by unwanted competition. Then it was time to begin selling the line to Wall Street. Unfortunately, it was difficult to prove the value of their product, let alone prove that it existed. To solve this, Spivey went to sales meetings with a large map that showed the route of the fiber as well as pictures of the amplifiers built inside maximum security bunkers along the route. The reception was not always good. Many disliked the language of the contract Spread wanted them to sign, especially the language that kept the companies from sharing the line with their clients. Spread ran into multiple problems finishing their project. One held them up for some time while they struggled to find a way to bury cable under a river. They eventually found a tunnel that worked perfectly for their purposes. Another was the hostility they faced in a small town in Pennsylvania when they attempted to get permission to dig under a parking lot that blocked their route.....

Summary Of Flash Boys

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Flash Boys - A Wall Street Revolt - A Comprehensive Summary "Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt" by Michael Lewis is a non-fiction book that exposes the dark side of high-frequency trading (HFT) and its impact on the stock market. The book tells the story of a group of traders and entrepreneurs who were determined to challenge the corrupt and unfair practices of HFT firms, which use high-speed computers and algorithms to front-run the trades of ordinary investors and make huge profits at their expense. The book is divided into three parts. In the first part, "The Machine," Lewis introduces the reader to the world of high-frequency trading and the technology that makes it possible. He describes how the stock market has become a game of milliseconds, where speed is everything and the fastest traders win. He also introduces the main characters of the story, including Brad Katsuyama, a former trader at the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), who becomes the leader of the group that challenges HFT. In the second part, "The Salamander," Lewis tells the story of how Katsuyama and his team discovered that the stock market was rigged against them and other ordinary investors. They found that HFT firms were using a practice called "predatory latency arbitrage," which allowed them to buy and sell stocks ahead of other traders by exploiting the time delay between different stock exchanges. Katsuyama and his team were determined to find a way to level the playing field and expose the unfair practices of HFT. In the third part, "The Wolf," Lewis describes how Katsuyama and his team created a new stock exchange, called IEX, that was designed to prevent HFT firms from front-running the trades of ordinary investors. IEX introduced a new system called a "speed bump," which added a delay of 350 microseconds to all trades, thus eliminating the advantage of HFT firms. The creation of IEX was a huge success, and it soon became one of the fastest-growing stock exchanges in the United States. Throughout the book, Lewis exposes the corrupt practices of HFT firms and the complicity of Wall Street banks and regulators in allowing them to operate. He shows how HFT has created a two-tiered market, where the most sophisticated traders can make huge profits at the expense of ordinary investors. He also highlights the importance of transparency and fairness in financial markets, and the need for reform to prevent abuses. One of the key themes of the book is the power of technology to disrupt and transform industries. Lewis shows how the rise of HFT has fundamentally changed the nature of the stock market, and how new technology can be used to challenge and overcome the unfair practices of entrenched players. He also highlights the role of entrepreneurship and innovation in driving change and creating new opportunities. The Routledge Companion To Labor And Media

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Labor resides at the center of all media and communication production, from the workers who create the information technologies that form the dynamic core of the global capitalist system and the designers who create media content to the salvage workers who dismantle the industry’s high-tech trash. The Routledge Companion to Labor and Media is the first book to bring together representative research from the diverse body of scholarly work surrounding this often fragmentary field, and seeks to provide a comprehensive resource for the study and teaching of media and labor. Essays examine work on the mostly unglamorous side of media and cultural production, technology manufacture, and every occupation in between. Specifically, this book features: -wide-ranging international case studies spanning the major global hubs of media labor; -interdisciplinary approaches for thinking about and analyzing class and labor in information communication technology (ICT), consumer electronics (CE), and media/cultural production; -an overview of global political economic conditions affecting media workers; -reports on chemical environments and their effect on the health of media workers and consumers; -activist scholarship on media and labor, and inspiring stories of resistance and solidarity.

Television Beyond And Across The Iron Curtain

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From the mid-1950s onwards, the rise of television as a mass medium took place in many East and West European countries. As the most influential mass medium of the Cold War, television triggered new practices of consumption and media production, and of communication and exchange on both sides of the Iron Curtain. This volume leans on the long-neglected fact that, even during the Cold War era, television could easily become a cross-border matter. As such, it brings together transnational perspectives on convergence zones, observations, collaborations, circulations and interdependencies between Eastern and Western television. In particular, the authors provide empirical ground to include socialist television within a European and global media history. Historians and media, cultural and literary scholars take interdisciplinary perspectives to focus on structures, actors, flow, contents or the reception of cross-border television. Their contributions cover Albania, the CSSR, the GDR, Russia and the Soviet Union, Serbia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia, thus complementing Western-dominated perspectives on Cold War mass media with a specific focus on the spaces and actors of East European communication. Last but not least, the volume takes a long-term perspective crossing the fall of the Iron Curtain, as many trends of the post-socialist period are linked to, or pick up, socialist traditions.

Why Simple Wins

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Imagine what you could do with the time you spend writing emails every day. Complexity is killing companies' ability to innovate and adapt, and simplicity is fast becoming the competitive advantage of our time. Why Simple Wins helps leaders and their teams move beyond the feelings of frustration and futility that come with so much unproductive work in today's corporate world to create a corporate culture where valuable, essential, meaningful work is the norm. By learning how to eliminate redundancies, communicate with clarity, and make simplification a habit, individuals and companies can begin to recognize which activities are time-sucks and which create lasting value. Lisa Bodell's simplification method has several unique principles: Simplification is a skill that's available to us all, yet very few leaders use it. Simplification is the right thing to do--for our customers, for our company, and for each other. Operating with simplification as our core business model will make it easier to be respectful of each other's time. Simplification drives culture, and culture in turn drives employee engagement, customer relations, and overall productivity. This book is inspired by Bodell's passion for eliminating barriers to innovation and productivity. In it, she explains why change and innovation are so hard to achieve--and it's not what you might expect. The reality is this: we spend our days drowning in mundane tasks like meetings, emails, and reports. These are often self-created complexities that prevent us from getting to the meaningful work that truly matters. Using simple stories and techniques, Why Simple Wins shows that by using simplicity as an operating principle, we can eliminate the busy work that puts a chokehold on us every day, and instead spend time on the work that we value.
