Schooling has long been held responsible for the health and well-being of children. However, against an international background of rising concern about students’ performance and well-being, schools and teachers have faced escalating expectations of their health-related work. While various stakeholders have ideas about what teachers’ health work entails, we know little about teachers’ contributions, engagement and personal satisfaction with this work. As teachers’ work represents a significant national investment, insight into the cost–benefit of teachers’ health work is vital to establishing the broader economic contribution of schools to society. Teachers as Health Workers offers a critical perspective on these matters, documenting the day-to-day work of Australian teachers as they grapple with the challenges, and joys, of balancing education and health-related responsibilities. Whilst shifts in policy, economics and globalisation influence localised enactment of teachers’ health work, the economic modelling, theorising and methodological innovations of this research address enduring themes and challenges. This book provides a selection of 23 lesson and seminar outlines designed to encourage the teaching of health statistics. It concentrates on a core of statistical knowledge judged important for all categories of health trainees, including medical students. Emphasis is placed on statistical principles and methods that can help health personnel make rational decisions concerning the management of individual patients or the monitoring of health systems. Topics represent an internationally applicable basic curriculum that reflects technological developments in data handling and information communication. Lessons and seminars are presented in sections related to: (1) statistical principles and methods; (2) health statistics; and (3) statistics in medicine. Community health workers (CHW) play a vital role in the provision of health-care services in South Africa, and the need for the training and development of these CHWs is obvious and urgent. A major obstacle to the provision of such training is the low level of literacy among CHWs. It is for this reason that Juta Academic has teamed up with a number of key organisations and professionals involved in community health and adult education to develop the Health for All series. With over 150 illustrations, these outcomes-based training materials will develop the health-care knowledge and skills of CHWs and bolster their literacy, language and communication skills.
