BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is a valuable resource for teachers and other professionals who are looking for a proven way to increase cultural appreciation and awareness. New applications of the ABCs model of Cultural Understanding and Communication are presented and discussed in this new volume, based on studies done in the United States, and Canada and Europe. In this ground-breaking project, the authors describe how the ABCs model complicated and challenged and changed the cultural perceptions of those who participated in it, even those who were initially highly resistant to such possibilities. At the heart of the project is the exchange of narratives – life stories that give insight into the cultural worlds of selves and others. In addition to the narratives, other instruments including the Transcultural Competence Scale (TCC), provide further evidence of the positive impact of the ABCs on participants' receptivity toward cultural differences. In the TRANSABCs project, researchers from both sides of the Atlantic invited teacher candidates, students who will become workplace and other professionals to write an autobiography (A) of themselves from various cultural perspectives, a biography (B) of an individual who is culturally different from themselves along particular dimensions, and to use these documents to conduct cross-cultural comparisons (C) between themselves and the person they interviewed. Furthermore, candidates developed culturally responsive ideas for the school or the workplace (C). These exchanges and analyses produced epiphanies and insights that translated into specific actions to improve cultural understanding and communication in classrooms and workplaces. Educators and professionals can take from these examples to inspire their own personal journey toward greater cultural understanding and sensitivity.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Children and teens are simultaneously complex and predictable. Behavior theory and research can provide ways of predicting behaviors and designing classroom structures that benefit all students. Behavior Management: Systems, Classrooms, and Individuals is a highly readable, student-friendly textbook that meets the needs of both undergraduate and graduate teaching programs. By covering theory, systems, classrooms, and individuals, the authors have created a pragmatic resource that can be used by a range of individuals seeking reliable, evidence-based techniques integrating behavior management into effective classrooms, including both upcoming and established educators. This text uses a funnel approach to guide readers from the “big picture” down to the individual student. Part I begins by introducing the foundations of classroom management with a discussion of prominent theorists, legislation, common disabilities, and the basics of behavior. Part II provides discussion on classroom management communities, including systems of support and structure in schools and classrooms. Part III focuses on the individual to give both current and future teachers tools for building and nurturing relationships with students and understanding and responding to student behavior. The final chapter offers tools for self-reflection and managing stress and burnout. Key Features: * Real-world cases and classroom examples to integrate content with practice * Chapters begin with learning objectives and key terms and end with summaries for comprehension * Bolded terms along with a comprehensive glossary to improve retention of material * “Make a Connection” boxes to synthesize content across chapters * Content connections to high-leverage practices in call-out boxes * Examples, figures, and templates to clarify and expand on key concepts

BOOK EXCERPT:
For Classroom Management and Behavior Management courses. Classroom Management: A Proactive Approach, second edition is based on three principles: community, prevention of discipline problems, and positive support for students with behavior difficulties. The text is designed to meet the needs of both pre-service and veteran educators, both in general and special education, by merging the best practices of both in order to provide a practical and research-based guide to manage all students including the culturally diverse and those with special needs. In the second edition, special consideration is given to students with the following problem behaviors: ADHD, nonverbal learning disabilities, passive-aggressive behavior, depression, aggressive behaviors, and students receiving special education for emotional disabilities. The author also teaches his readers how learning communities meet student basic needs for affiliation, control and mastery; how many behavior problems can be prevented through consistent routines, effective group management, engaging lessons and positive student-teacher relationships; and for those students with emotional or behavioral difficulties, interventions must be data-based and proactive. Infused with the belief that successful classroom management is based on a love for children and a will to succeed, the text guides readers to a deeper understanding that good teaching trumps problems with learning every time.
