This book examines how de-radicalisation programmes have been portrayed in the media and details the role of public relations (PR) strategies employed by such programmes and Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) to create positive coverage of their work. CVE and de-radicalisation programmes have seen a significant rise in recent years and are now cornerstones of many countries’ counterterrorism strategies. Despite the increased importance of these tools to counter violent radicalisation leading to terrorism, they remain controversial and sometimes receive fierce public criticism and opposition. This work looks at how CVE and de-radicalisation programs are able to influence a country’s discourse on de-radicalisation, and how far governmental programs differ from non-governmental initiatives in terms of their PR strategies. The book also provides a theoretical basis of how the discourse on CVE is constructed in the media. As major case studies, this book examines the United Kingdom, Germany and Nigeria. For these countries, the authors have gathered and assessed roughly 3,000 newspaper articles on de-radicalisation programmes over a decade to provide an empirical base. Vulnerability, Extremism, and Schooling: Restorative Practices, Policy Enactment, and Managing Risk documents and analyzes efforts by educational policymakers to combat susceptibility to extremism within disadvantaged communities. Schools worldwide are increasingly enlisted in the efforts of nation-states to prevent or counter violent extremism. However, since extremism is a notoriously complex and difficult concept to define, attempts to counter violent extremism are inevitably entangled in issues of political and social power. Through the lens of affective governance—which refers to a style of governing emphasizing the emotional and psychological needs of citizens, as well as their sense of connection and belonging to their community—this book draws attention to how policy enactment can be closely aligned with government agendas revolving around the management of risk. The authors argue that extremism is closely tied to systemic marginalization and, while efforts to combat a susceptibility to extremism are important, so is a continual critique of such efforts. This is especially true when approaches are aimed at populations who are already marginalized.

Non-State Actors in Conflicts: Conspiracies, Myths, and Practices explores some of the most pressing topics in political science and media studies.
