Featuring 20 selected bully-themed children's picture books, this teacher-friendly resource book offers lesson plans and activities to assist educators in strengthening bystander support against bullying. Classroom Bullying Prevention, Pre-K–4th Grade: Children's Books, Lesson Plans, and Activities provides strategies to deter and prevent bullying—a serious and widespread social problem that starts early and causes great harm to not only the victims but also the bullies themselves. The book's content and the included lesson plans are specifically designed to supplement school-wide efforts to reduce and eliminate bullying. The lesson plans enable students to understand the importance of environments where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and respected. Supplemented by creative illustrations and summarized tables of key information, the book will be helpful to community and school librarians, elementary school teachers, and paraprofessionals serving pre-K through 4th grade students. Additionally, school-based mental health professionals such as school counselors, psychologists, and social workers can utilize the book's resources to teach social skills in classrooms and group counseling sessions.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The numerous anti-bullying programs in schools across the United States have done little to reduce the number of reported bullying instances. One reason for this is that little attention has been paid to the role of the media and popular culture in adolescents' bullying and mean-girl behavior. This book addresses media role models in television, film, picture books, and the Internet in the realm of bullying and relational aggression. It highlights portrayals with unproductive strategies that lead to poor resolutions or no resolution at all. Young viewers may learn ineffective, even dangerous, ways of handling aggressive situations. Victims may feel discouraged when they are unable to handle the situation as easily as in media portrayals. They may also feel their experiences are trivialized by comic portrayals. Entertainment programming, aimed particularly at adolescents, often portray adults as incompetent or uncaring and include mean-spirited teasing. In addition, overuse of the term "bully" and defining all bad behavior as "bullying" may dilute the term and trivialize the problem.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Many clinicians recognize that denying or ignoring grief issues in children leaves them feeling alone and that acknowledging loss is crucial part of a child’s healthy development. Really dealing with loss in productive ways, however, is sometimes easier said than done. For decades, Life and Loss has been the book clinicians have relied on for a full and nuanced presentation of the many issues with which grieving children grapple as well as an honest exploration of the interrelationship between unresolved grief, educational success, and responsible citizenry. The third edition of Life and Loss brings this exploration firmly into the twenty-first century and makes a convincing case that children’s grief is no longer restricted only to loss-identified children. Children’s grief is now endemic; it is global. Life and Loss is not just the book clinicians need to understand grief in the twenty-first century—it’s the book they need to work with it in constructive ways.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Rated one of the "Best ADHD Books of All Time" by Book Authority The ADHD Empowerment Guide is different from other parenting ADHD books because it helps parents identify and build upon their child's strengths and natural talents in order to develop a specific plan to unlock their child's potential. Parents are invited to complete two easy-to-follow questionnaires to identify their child's natural abilities, as well as determine key characteristics in their child that research has shown to help children with ADHD succeed in life. These characteristics include emotional control, integrity, grit, resiliency, resourcefulness, organization, motivation, school fit, support systems, and productive use of technology. Using the practical strategies presented, strength-building activities, and the information learned from the questionnaires, parents can develop a success plan that will unlock their child's potential and build a positive outlook on the journey of raising a child with ADHD. The authors, two professionals who have “been there and done that” with their own children with ADHD, illustrate their strategies and content by highlighting successful people with ADHD who excelled in various areas and share some of their success secrets to raising a successful child with ADHD.
