ŃDUÑỌDE: CALABAR JOURNAL OF THE HUMANITIES is a peer-reviewed and refereed international journal of the Faculty of Arts, University of Calabar. It is a multidisciplinary Journal published biannually (January and July). It is inviting original research papers focusing on theories, trends, methods and applications that reflect the interdisciplinary perspectives of the human and social sciences. It challenges, provokes, and excites thinking, ideas, debates and discussions on potential topics of contemporary relevance in Archaeology, Anthropology, Communication/Media Studies, Cultural Studies, English Studies, Fine and Applied Arts, History, International Studies, Law, Leisure Studies, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Modern Languages (French, Spanish, German), Philosophy, Pragmatics, Religious Studies, Sociology, Sports, Theatre Arts, Tourism and Translation Studies.

This book is part of a three-volume book-set published under the general title of Performative Inter-Actions in African Theatre. Each of the three books in the set has a unique subtitle that works to better focus its content and differentiates it from the other two volumes. The contributors’ backgrounds and global spread adequately reflect the international focus of the three books that make up the collection. The contributions, in their various ways, demonstrate the many advances and ingenious solutions adopted by African theatre practitioners in tackling some of the challenges arising from the adverse colonial experience, as well as the “one-sided” advance of globalisation. The contributions attest to the thriving nature of African theatre and performance, which in the face of these challenges, has managed to retain its distinctiveness, while at the same time acknowledging, contesting, and appropriating influences from elsewhere into an aesthetic that is identifiably African. Consequently, the three books are presented as a comprehensive exploration of the current state of African theatre and performance, both on the continent and diaspora. Performative Inter-Actions in African Theatre 2: Innovation, Creativity and Social Change contains essays that address performativity as a process, particularly in the context of theatre’s engagement with contemporary realities with the hope of instigating social change. The innovativeness of the examples explored within the book points to the ingenuity and adaptive capacity of African theatre in ways that engage indigenous forms in the service of contemporary realities. Contributions in Innovation, Creativity and Social Change explore forms such as Theatre for Development, community and applied theatre, and indigenous juridical performances, as well as the work of contemporary dramatists and performers who set out to instigate change in society.

This book aims to offer a broad history of theatre in Africa. The roots of African theatre are ancient and complex and lie in areas of community festival, seasonal rhythm and religious ritual, as well as in the work of popular entertainers and storytellers. Since the 1950s, in a movement that has paralleled the political emancipation of so much of the continent, there has also grown a theatre that comments back from the colonized world to the world of the colonists and explores its own cultural, political and linguistic identity. A History of Theatre in Africa offers a comprehensive, yet accessible, account of this long and varied chronicle, written by a team of scholars in the field. Chapters include an examination of the concepts of 'history' and 'theatre'; North Africa; Francophone theatre; Anglophone West Africa; East Africa; Southern Africa; Lusophone African theatre; Mauritius and Reunion; and the African diaspora.

This book provides an overview of the full range of the teaching and practice of Committed Theatre and theatre of commitment in Nigeria for scholars in the arts and cultural studies. It is divided into four sections; Chapter 1: Theatre in Development Discourse, which is comprised of four papers that explore the theories of practice of theatre of commitment. Chapter 2 : Nigerian Theatre in Perspective discusses the trends, ethos of revolution, theatrical elements and communalistic/individualistic tendencies and the taboos theatre, drama and traditional theatre in Nigeria. In Chapter 3, the social, cultural and historical implications of Nigeria theatre, is examined in papers that focus on politics, theatre, and echoes of separatism in Nigeria and including an analysis of Aesthetagement of the Calabar Carnival in Nigeria. Chapter 4 performs a critical analysis of committed theatre practices from a global perspective. Interviews were conducted with committed artistes from Nigeria, Canada, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. Committed Theatre Perspectives in Teaching and Practice in Nigeria has the potential to impact the philosophy, teaching, and practice of theatre. The ideas contained in the book provide an excellent framework for understanding the importance and more importantly, the impact of theatre on society.

Journal of Integrative Humanism is a multidisciplinary academic journal that publishes well-researched articles that approach the topical issues bothering humanity from an integrativist perspective, taking cognizance of the spiritual and physical dimensions of reality. This volume of the journal - volume five, number one - contains seventeen articulate essays on topical issues in Africa/African studies written by contemporary African scholars from diverse disciplines - Philosophy, Religion, Linguistics, Theater/Media Studies, Oceanography, Political Science, and Education. Some of the topical issues addressed are: the nature of metaphysics in Integrative Humanism (a contemporary school of African philosophy), development of viable systems of logic in African philosophy, education, social change, "Boko Haram"-terrorism in Nigeria and health. The articles are informative, engaging and comprehensible.
