In this pioneering new book, authors Klastrup and Tosca explore the many ways that transmedial worlds are present in people’s everyday life, proposing a new theory of (trans)media use for the digital age. People are not only reading, watching and playing in fictional worlds like never before, but also using them to reflect about their lives through Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and other channels, commenting on their marriages or their life at the office, analyzing current news, or reminiscing on the role these worlds played in their childhood. The book’s unique methodological approach combines an aesthetic and literary perspective that looks closely at the different fictional universes, with an empirical user perspective that builds upon 15 years of sustained work on transmediality. The result is a theory that covers both the personal, experiential dimension of fictional worlds and the social dimension of sharing with each other. On the one hand, we find familiarity pleasurable and soothing; on the other, we crave novelty and long for a sense of discovery. We blame algorithms, intent on selling us more of the same, and on a media industry too greedy to risk investing in intellectually challenging, radically new, products. Sameness and Repetition in Contemporary Media Culture takes a comprehensive approach that both theorises and historically grounds the idea of repetition in relation to media as something that is deeply embedded in our cultural tradition. This book explores transmedia dynamics in various facets of fiction and nonfiction transmedia studies. Young adult literature is often referred to as the originating source for film adaptations that turn into large transmedia storyworlds and franchises. This is, however, only one of the transmedia interactions involving young adult literature in modern culture. This Element unfolds these relations focusing on transmedia practices that bridge the dominant public discursive split between print based and digital media. Today print and digital products work together as well as independently in interconnected networks and these practices puncture ideas of a media hierarchy. Specifically, it is demonstrated how literature for young people take part in transmedia storytelling on a macro level but also in so-called cluster works that work as transmedia storytelling on a micro level.

Transmedia in Asia and the Pacific is a timely exploration of a global media phenomena that offers a unique perspective on the production, consumption and use of transmedia storytelling in the Asia Pacific region. Through close analysis of case studies from Australia, Cambodia, China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, and West Papua, the chapters in this book provide insight into the cultural and transcultural contexts against which transmedia storytelling takes place in the region. This Open Access book provides a comprehensive review of the rapidly developing esport phenomenon by examining one of its contemporary flagship titles, Overwatch (Blizzard Entertainment 2016), through three central themes and from a rich variety of research methods and perspectives. As a game with more than 40 million individual players, an annual international World Cup, and a franchised professional league with teams from Canada, China, Europe, South Korea, and the US, Overwatch provides a multifaceted perspective to the cultural, social, and economic topics associated with the development of esports, which has begun to attract attention from both commercial and academic audiences. The book starts with an introduction chapter to Overwatch and esports engagement in general, co-authored by the editors. This is followed by 15 unique chapters from scholars within the field of game cultures and esports, representing ten different nationalities. The contributions construct thematic sections that divide the book into three parts: Players, Diverse Audiences? and Fan & Fiction Work. As such, the parts provide a wide-ranging overview of esport engagement, thus disclosing the phenomenon's cross-cultural, transmedial, and interconnected relations that have not been probed earlier in a single anthology.

Taking media scholar Henry Jenkins’s concept of ‘convergence culture’ and the related notions of ‘participatory culture’ and ‘transmedia storytelling’ as points of departure, the essays compiled in the present volume provide terminological clarification, offer exemplary case studies, and discuss the broader implications of such developments for the humanities. Most of the contributions were originally presented at the transatlantic conference Convergence Culture Reconsidered organized by the editors at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany, in October 2013.
