How well do you know your ABCs? It’s been probably a long time since you last went over the basic English alphabet. In this book you’ll have the opportunity to revisit each letter, from A all the way to Z, which sequentially marks the 26 basic guideposts to achievement that I’ll be discussing. But first, let’s backtrack to that time when we were first taught to read and write our ABCs. We didn’t have any idea then about its value and much less about its importance in our lives, but we surely found learning those 26 letters a lot of fun. We treasured almost every moment of it. In my case, I was so excited to go home and to show my parents how well I was doing in my ABCs. I wanted to show off to them whatever accomplishments I had done in school. It didn’t matter what grade my teacher gave me for them. It was enough to know that I’ve done something when the school day was over. Finally, my parents would take a look at my masterpieces from school and then sometimes say that I didn’t do that well. They’d tell me to my face that I messed up. I didn’t like that because instead of focusing on my achievements, no matter how small, it seemed to me as if they were always too much in a rush to really look over and appreciate what I was doing. This left with no choice but to do whatever it took to get better grades in school. I learned to cheat a little like so many others of my classmates—but just a little, mind you—and got stuck with that habit! My parents were proud of my progress in school but deep inside me, I felt that there was really nothing about what I was doing to be proud of. I knew that some of my classmates and acquaintances didn’t do it my way. Instead of facing the challenge thrown to them by their parents, they found it easier to fight back and rebel. They simply decided to no longer pay attention to their schoolwork. What’s the point, they’d ask, if all that their parents and most people could see are their weaknesses and failures? The problem here is that many of us are taught to achieve rather than to learn. We are taught to aim at getting somewhere but we are not really taught how to get there. As children, many of us get the idea that achieving small things doesn’t matter at all. What matters is that we’d get something for our effort, no matter how small the effort. The idea of greed perhaps won’t be there yet. We just need to perform to the best of our ability and that’s it. It’s really no big deal. Many of us didn’t like that idea, of course, even if we couldn’t articulate our objection at the time. We just didn’t have the words for it yet. I think this is where the power of the alphabet comes in. It gives us the power to create something for ourselves. After we learned our ABCs, we could wondrously put them together so we can write or speak a word, two words, three words, four words, and so on.

Possessing the uncanny ability to fry a television set from twenty paces can really wreck a girl’s social life... If you’re looking for proof, just ask sixteen-year-old Alexandra Parker. After catching her boyfriend in the arms of the prettiest girl in school, she made the journey from social elite to social pariah in a haze of electricity and exploding electronics. But finding herself at the bottom of Bay View High’s social hierarchy was nothing compared to the shock of discovering who—and what—she really is. After being zapped out of a burning bookstore by the mysterious Declan—a hero nearly as handsome as he is infuriating—Alex finds herself under the protection of the powerful Grayson family. It’s through them that she learns the truth: that the world she’s always known is nothing like it appears to be... and that she has far more in common with them than she might want to believe. Now, on the run from a fire-wielding hit man and a secretive government organization, Alex must navigate a strange and treacherous new world filled with superhuman mutants known as Variants. As she begins to unravel the many secrets of her family’s past, she uncovers the real reason for her parents’ death twelve years earlier—and finds out that the threat to her family, and to everyone she cares about, is still dangerously real. Today, it often seems as though Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) have reached a stage of normalization, at least in some countries and among certain social groups. Apparently some practices – for example in vitro fertilization (IVF) – have become standard worldwide. The contributors to Assisted Reproduction Across Borders argue against normalization as an uncontested overall trend. This volume reflects on the state of the art of ARTs. From feminist perspectives, the contributors focus on contemporary political debates triggered by ARTs. They examine the varying ways in which ARTs are interpreted and practised in different contexts, depending on religious, moral and political approaches. Assisted Reproduction Across Borders embeds feminist analysis of ARTs across a wide variety of countries and cultural contexts, discussing controversial practices such as surrogacy from the perspective of the global South as well as the global North as well as inequalities in terms of access to IVF. This volume will appeal to scholars and students of anthropology, ethnography, philosophy, political science, history, sociology, film studies, media studies, literature, art history, area studies, and interdisciplinary areas such as gender studies, cultural studies, and postcolonial studies.

This book, Addiction to Recovery: Unlocking Your Potential, is an accumulation of existential realization, many resources, years of recovery, education, insights, and years working in the field of addiction, with all adepts in the goal of personal transformation from addiction to recovery. This is an integrative approach to living in wellness of recovery. I vacated my own mind through deep personal process, my own form of meditation, and this book came about. My hope is this book unlocks the potential that advances new insight into the recovery process for each individual by reframing the process in such a way that the right interpretation by the reader will help recovery click into place. What we need to celebrate in recovery is the self-discovery of the individual. I offer my carefully considered overviews and assessments on the best-known treatments (theories) connected to recovery. I have provided a new outlook as a guide for the unwary who had failed at recovery in the past and those just coming into recovery for the first time. I count myself among the autodidacts, the self-taught perpetual student fueled by a passion for new answers and a sense of mission.
