BOOK EXCERPT:
Though undertreated by modern scholars, Martin Luther's lectures on Deuteronomy are critical to understanding his theological development as an exegete and also the course of the Reformation in the wake of Luther's return from the Wartburg in 1522. In these lectures, Luther engages deeply with Moses, whom he sees as an author, prophet, and ruler. These three ways of regarding Moses allow Luther to forge a new approach to the Mosaic law, shaping his response to what he perceives as the evangelical legalism of Andreas Karlstadt and Thomas Müntzer. By shedding light on these exegetical principles and connecting these lectures to surrounding events, Miles Hopgood brings new clarity as to why Luther broke with Karlstadt and the nature of his dispute with Müntzer, demonstrates the importance of the Hebrew Bible in shaping Luther's mature exegesis, and opens the door for fresh perspectives not only on the events of 1521-1525 but Luther's entire career as interpreter of scripture.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Modern science’s understanding of life is built upon the belief that all features of life—including of course consciousness—are completely describable in terms of molecules and their activities. From this perspective, living beings can be viewed as simply constituting a particular subset of the material universe, and as such are ultimately defined by the same laws of physics and chemistry. This material-only hypothesis is usually referred to as scientific materialism or materialism, and it is essentially a modern intellectual fixture. If true, this hypothesis has profound implications for life, and in particular eliminates the possibility of deeper and/or religious aspects (and of course free will too).

BOOK EXCERPT:
Ruby-Jane Ryan is a hardworking and widely travelled freelance journalist in Christchurch, New Zealand. She has friends who are prone to gossip and although Ruby-Jane is fond of them, they also annoy the heck out of her. One of them is constantly trying to woo her, without success, into ascending new spiritual heights with him, preferably in his spa pool. Another stretches their friendship with his complaints as well as his problems with various women he discovers on dating dates online. Additional work for Ruby-Jane is as an advice columnist, written by an 'agony aunt' and who is kept secret from her gossipy friends. It's through her column that she's able to exact a form of revenge on her persistently annoying pals who write to her column, not knowing she is, in fact, 'Aunty Jane'. For relaxation and a good laugh, Ruby-Jane loves to watch old movies, amusing documentaries and old, cheesy ads on TV...

FROM THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF A MAN CALLED OVE, NOW A MAJOR FILM STARRING TOM HANKS Heartbreaking and hilarious in equal measure, this novel will charm and delight anyone who has ever had a grandmother. 'A touching, sometimes funny, often wise portrait of grief' Kirkus Everyone remembers the smell of their grandmother's house. Everyone remembers the stories their grandmother told them. But does everyone remember their grandmother flirting with policemen? Driving illegally? Breaking into a zoo in the middle of the night? Firing a paintball gun from a balcony in her dressing gown? Seven-year-old Elsa does. Some might call Elsa's granny 'eccentric', or even 'crazy'. Elsa calls her a superhero. And granny's stories, of knights and princesses and dragons and castles, are her superpower. Because, as Elsa is starting to learn, heroes and villains don't always exist in imaginary kingdoms; they could live just down the hallway. As Christmas draws near, even the best superhero grandmothers may have one or two things they'd like to apologise for. And, in the process, Elsa can have some breath-taking adventures of her own . . .
