The Hearing before the Committee on Education and the Workforce was held May 20, 1999. The hearing lists statements by educators, elected officials, and the Colorado Commissioner of Education on the Academic Achievement for All proposal, the Straight A's proposal. This proposal gives states a choice: they can either continue operating federal education programs as before, or, at their option, they can combine certain K-12 federal education funds in exchange for strict academic accountability. Straight A's does not eliminate any K-12 programs and, in many respects, is modeled after Texas' successful state accountability system where performance and results are central. Appendices list written statements by the participants. (DFR)

This volume takes an international and multidisciplinary approach to understanding students’ academic achievement. It does so by integrating educational literature with developmental psychology and family studies perspectives. Each of the nine chapters focuses on a particular country: China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, or the United States. It describes the country as a cultural context, examines the current school system and parenting in light of the school system, and provides empirical evidence from that country regarding links between parenting and students’ academic achievement. The book highlights similarities and differences in education and parenting across these nine countries - all varying widely in socioeconomic and cultural factors that affect schools and families. The volume contributes to greater understanding of links between parenting and academic performance in different cultural groups. It sheds light on how school systems and parenting are embedded in larger cultural settings that have implications for students’ educational experiences and academic achievement. As two of the most important contexts in which children and adolescents spend time, understanding how schools and families jointly contribute to academic achievement holds promise for advancing the international agenda of promoting quality education for all.

In this book, I have clearly pointed out that parental pressure acts as a significant stressors and appropriate level of Stress experienced by students due to challenging stimulus can lead to positive outcomes such as motivation and improved task performance, while threatening ones can result in anxiety, depression, and social dysfunction. The positive enjoyable and productive classroom climate helps the students to succeed in academic achievement in economics and develops their potentials and individuality. It is in the hands of the teachers to create a positive classroom climate, by considering carefully the basic principles of an effective classroom management plan. The roles of the school and teachers have always been vital in developing the students’ innate potentials and all round personality development.

Girls are now out-performing boys at GCSE level, giving rise to a debate in the media on boys' underachievement. However, often such work has been a 'knee-jerk' response, led by media, not based on solid research. Boys, Girls and Achievement - Addressing the Classroom Issues fills that gap and: *provides a critical overview of the current debate on achievement; *Focuses on interviews with young people and classroom observations to examine how boys and girls see themselves as learners; *analyses the strategies teachers can use to improve the educational achievements of both boys and girls. Becky Francis provides teachers with a thorough analysis of the various ways in which secondary school pupils construct their gender identities in the classroom. The book also discusses methods teachers might use challenge these gender constructions in the classroom and thereby address the 'gender-gap' in achievement.
