Coderspeak

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Software applications have taken over our lives. We use and are used by software many times a day. Nevertheless, we know very little about the invisibly ubiquitous workers who write software. Who are they and how do they perceive their own practice? How does that shape the ways in which they collaborate to build the myriad of apps that we use every day? Coderspeak provides a critical approach to the digital transformation of our world through an engaging and thoughtful analysis of the people who write software. It is a focused and in-depth look at one programming language and its community – Ruby - based on ethnographic research at a London company and conversations with members of the wider Ruby community in Europe, the Americas and Japan. This book shows that the place people write code, the language they write it in and the stories shared by that community are crucial in questioning and unpacking what it means to be a ‘coder’. Understanding this social group is essential if we are to grasp a future (and a present) in which computer programming increasingly dominates our lives. Praise for Coderspeak 'Heurich perfectly captures the generous camaraderie, quirky spirit and intellectual curiosity at the heart of the Ruby world. Packed with tidbits of Ruby history, code snippets, and fascinating conversations, this book has something to teach every Rubyist.' Jemma Issroff, Ruby Core Team

The Evolution Of Emi Research In European Higher Education

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents state-of-the-art research into English-medium instruction (EMI) in European higher education over the last 20 years, offering a comprehensive comparative analysis toward identifying gaps in our understanding of relevant theories, research, and practice. Molino, Dimova, Kling, and Larsen argue for the need to take stock of the progression of EMI research in European higher education in order to consolidate scholarship and better inform EMI implementation in new contexts. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of EMI implementation, including policies, attitudes, language use, assessment, training, learning outcomes, identity, and intercultural communication across five different countries: Denmark, Croatia, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. The book brings together the authors' collective work on an annotated database of over 200 resources, featuring a range of publications of varying format, type, and language, as well as information on relevant research questions, methodologies, and findings. This detailed approach allows in-depth discussions on the most widely researched areas in EMI as well as those under-explored toward outlining a way forward for future research in both the European higher education context and on a global scale. This book will be key reading for scholars working in English-medium instruction, world Englishes, English as an international language, English as a lingua franca, and applied linguistics.

A Short History Of Economic Progress

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Y. S. Brenner is an economist whose main concern is with development, and this attitude is reflected in his approach to economic history. He begins this seminal study in the era of the Reformation in Europe, and bases it on the hypothesis that once started, economic progress will spread over ever-increasing parts of the earth wherever and whenever conditions become suitable. From this point of view, he examines the nature of the impediments which prevent the more rapid and general progress of mankind towards greater material affluence, while at the same time considering the positive growth promoting factors in the various economies. Thus, he provides an analysis of economic progress in the developed countries showing which natural, social, political and cultural forces promoted such progress and which delayed or hindered it. He attempts to explain why European nations took several decades to emulate the achievements of Britain and why nations in other parts of the world, such as Japan and Russia, were unable for a considerable time to match the advances made in parts of Western Europe and the United States. Finally, he attempts to explain why the developing countries are still finding it so difficult to catch up with the economic progress of the more advanced nations.Y. S. Brenner was Head of the Department of Economics at Cape Coast University in Ghana. The book arose from a series of lectures on economic development he delivered there during the years 1966-1967. This book was first published in 1969.

BOOK EXCERPT:

'The London-Budapest Game' is the true sequel to 'Sword of the Turul, ' with a unique glimpse into the British underground in World War II Hungary - and its aftermath. From 1991 to 2001, a Swedish-Russian joint Commission investigating the fate of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg discovered that 3 Hungarian numbered prisoners secretly held in Vladimir prison, Soviet Union had been connected to his case. One was Karoly Schandl, a young lawyer in Budapest who lived near the Swedish Embassy. This is the continuation of his shocking true story, supported by historical documents and excerpts from his private writings. Karoly's anti- Nazi resistance group was led by his childhood friend, Gabor Haraszty, a.k.a. British agent ALBERT. The group had links to MI9, ISLD (MI6), SOE, Colonel Howie, the Dutch and Polish Underground, the Tito partisans, and a group of famous Jewish parachutists from Palestine, with whom they had planned to collaborate in Hungary. It was a dangerous game, and only a few would survive ..
