The State Of American Hot Rodding

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

As the automotive world looks towards a future of electric vehicles, driverless technology and anonymous styling, what can be learned from the individuals who resist these trends and cling to their love of street rods and muscle cars? The hot rodding world still exists, but will it continue to hold a place in tomorrow's automotive culture? Gearhead and geographer David Miller has crisscrossed America in his custom built 1958 Chevy Apache pickup, interviewing hot rodders about what drives their passions, values and way of life. Their collected stories present a detailed portrait of modern hot rodding--a distinctly American subculture that survives by bucking the trends and attitudes that increasingly shape the transportation landscape.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Controversy, passion, and a totally new viewpoint are what Raoul Lowery Contreras brought to more than 200 American newspapers in 1988 when Washington, D.C.'s Hispanic Link distributed his inaugural Op-Ed columns. Contreras is so controversial and passionate that his views draw pain, rage, attacks, complaints and compliments from myriad critics and friends. During a one hour radio program, he was called a "paid agent of the CIA," a "Sandinista Communist," a "traitor," a "patriot," a "criminal," a "sell-out," and, a "coconut," brown on the outside and white on the inside. That was just by his family. The essays and columns in this collection were distributed by Creator's Syndicate and the New York Times Syndicate's New American News Service and published throughout the United States in newspapers of all sizes, from weeklies to massive metropolitican dailies read by millions. There is a new paradigm of politics and issues in the United States, the Hispanic Paradigm, and Raoul Lowery Contreras has chronicled it for all to read, absorb and be affected by.

Hot Art Cold War Western And Northern European Writing On American Art 1945 1990

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Hot Art, Cold War – Northern and Western European Writing on American Art 1945-1990 is one of two text anthologies that trace the reception of American art in Europe during the Cold War era through primary sources. With the exception of those originally published in English, the majority of these texts are translated into English for the first time from eight languages, and are introduced by scholarly essays. They offer a representative selection of the diverse responses to American art in Great Britain, Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, West Germany (FRG), Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. There was no single European discourse, as attitudes to American art were determined by a wide range of ideological, political, social, cultural, and artistic positions that varied considerably across the European nations. This volume and its companion, Hot Art, Cold War – Southern and Eastern European Writing on American Art 1945-1990, offer the reader a unique opportunity to compare how European art writers introduced and explained contemporary American art to their many and varied audiences. Whilst many are fluent in one or two foreign languages, few are able to read all twenty-five languages represented in the two volumes. These ground-breaking publications significantly enrich the fields of American art studies and European art criticism. This book, together with its companion volume Hot Art, Cold War – Southern and Eastern European Writing on American Art 1945-1990,, is a joint initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art and the editors of the journal Art in Translation at the University of Edinburgh. The journal, launched in 2009, publishes English-language translations of the most significant texts on art and visual cultures presently only available only in their source language. It is committed to widening the perspectives of art history, making it more pluralist in terms of its authors, viewpoints, and subject matter.

Wittenberg An American College

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"Half of all the colleges founded before the Civil War did not survive. Wittenberg did. This is the story of a college on the Ohio frontier that sought to Americanize millions of German immigrants and to Americanize the German Lutheran Church. In spite of that, Wittenberg was caught in the anti-foreign prejudice of “Nativists” who feared the influence of immigrants on American institutions. The school prospered after the Civil War as America embraced German culture from classical music to the Christmas tree. The school again faced prejudice in the anti-German furor of World War I. Simultaneously, this is the story of students and faculty coping with the pressures of a nation going from the poverty of the rural frontier to the wealth of an urban-industrial society and how they and Wittenberg changed."

Hot Music Ragmentation And The Bluing Of American Literature

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Hot Music, Ragmentation, and the Bluing of American Literature examines the diverse ways in which African American "hot" music influenced American culture - particularly literature - in early twentieth-century America. Steven C. Tracy provides a history of the fusion of African and European elements that formed African American "hot" music, and considers how terms like ragtime, jazz, and blues developed their own particular meanings for American music and society. He draws from the fields of literature, literary criticism, cultural anthropology, American studies, and folklore to demonstrate how blues as a musical and poetic form has been a critical influence on American literature. -- from dust jacket.
