The U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory is developing a mechanistic pavement design procedure for use in seasonal frost areas. The procedure was used to predict pavement performance of some test sections under construction at the Mn/ROAD facility. Simulations were conducted in three phases, investigating the effects on predictions of water table position, subgrade characteristics, asphalt model, and freeze season characteristics. The procedure predicted significantly different performance by the different test sections and highly variable results depending on the performance model applied. The simulated performance of the tests sections also was greatly affected by the subgrade conditions, e.g., density, soil moisture, and water table depth. In general, predictions for the full depth asphalt sections indicate that they will not fail due to cracking, but two of the three criteria for subgrade rufting indicate failure before the five or 10 year design life of the sections. Conventional sections are predicted not to fail due to subgrade rutting; however, sections including the more frost susceptible bases in their design are predicted to fail due to asphalt cracking relatively early in their design life, and sections with nonfrost susceptible bases are predicted to fail towards the end of the design life.

Murphy's buildings were compromises - "new wine in old bottles" as he once called them - and the book uses those "bottles" as lenses through which to understand not only Murphy's quest to find a middle ground for his architecture in China, but also to gaze at a tumultuous society facing an uncertain future. Murphy's buildings were more than vessels for either aesthetic visions or technical expertise; inadvertently they became political emblems, as Chinese rulers such as Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen's son called on Murphy for city planning advice to complement their hopes for urban reconstruction."--Jacket.

This thesis documents the development of a multifunctional nanoparticle system to enhance the chemotherapeutic efficiency of anti-cancer drugs, and contributes to research that helps decrease the side-effects in cancer patients while simultaneously increasing their survival rates. The work begins with an introduction to nanomedicine and cancer therapy, and contains a literature review on magnetic, gold, and core-shell nanoparticles. It also covers synthesis techniques, properties, various surface modifications, and the importance of magnetic and gold nanoparticles. The author dedicates a chapter to characterization techniques, experimental setup, and cell cultivation techniques for in-vitro studies. Further chapters describe the background, characterizations, and applications of multifunctional magnetite coated gold core-shell nanoparticles, and the doping of cobalt to magnetite and manganese to magnetite nanoparticles. The important highlight of this research was the control of the size, shape, composition, and surface chemistry of nanoparticles.

Over the course of the nineteenth century, drastic social and political changes, technological innovations, and exposure to non-Western cultures affected Germany's built environment in profound ways. The economic challenges of Germany's colonial project forced architects designing for the colonies to abandon a centuries-long, highly ornamental architectural style in favor of structural technologies and building materials that catered to the local contexts of its remote colonies, such as prefabricated systems. As German architects gathered information about the regions under their influence in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific—during expeditions, at international exhibitions, and from colonial entrepreneurs and officials—they published their findings in books and articles and organized lectures and exhibits that stimulated progressive architectural thinking and shaped the emerging modern language of architecture within Germany itself. Offering in-depth interpretations across the fields of architectural history and postcolonial studies, Itohan Osayimwese considers the effects of colonialism, travel, and globalization on the development of modern architecture in Germany from the 1850s until the 1930s. Since architectural developments in nineteenth-century Germany are typically understood as crucial to the evolution of architecture worldwide in the twentieth century, this book globalizes the history of modern architecture at its founding moment.

The design and production of novel peptides and proteins occupy pivotal positions in science and technology and will continue to do so in the 21st century. Protein Engineering and Design outlines the rapid advances in computer-based modeling, protein engineering, and methods needed for protein and peptide preparation and characterization. This indispensable reference lays the groundwork for understanding this multidisciplinary activity while providing an introduction for researchers and students to the field of protein design. - Introduces and defines the techniques involved in protein engineering and design - Provides a concise overview of key technologies involved and demonstrates their contributions to the specialized design and production of novel proteins and peptides

Architecture in the Digital Age addresses contemporary architectural practice in which digital technologies are radically changing how buildings are conceived, designed and produced. It discusses the digitally-driven changes, their origins, and their effects by grounding them in actual practices already taking place, while simultaneously speculating about their wider implications for the future. The book offers a diverse set of ideas as to what is relevant today and what will be relevant tomorrow for emerging architectural practices of the digital age.

This book provides a clear-sighted analysis which suggests that architectural design may yet shape and order the future of cities. A clear argument that emerges is that to retain their future agency, architects must understand the contours and ecologies of practice that constitute the global system of architectural production.
