CITY, PEOPLE and ARCHITECTURE No matter hom impressive or iconic building or tall skyscraperis upon the skyline of a city, these buildings are concieved with people as their users. Yet the question is, for which layer of citizenship do they serve ? The 11th ISVS (International Seminar for Vernacular Settlements) that was hosted by the School of Environmental Design and Architecture, Navrachana University brought together some important ideas and concerns as related to questions of development at large and vernacular settlements. From questions of ecological balance, use of resources and the way of the pastoral to the ones concerning technology, design and materiality of built environment. The 11th ISVS will be remembered as one that brought whole generation of young and talented scholars in the foreground. Many of them had carried out extensive field work to support their research. The seminar was also remarkable from the point of view of extensive representation of vernacular traditions in different part of the Indian Sub-continent and Southeast Asia along with a range of theoretical concerns.

This book contains papers presented at the International Conference on Emerging Smart Cities (ICESC2022), previously known as the International Conference on Civil, Offshore and Environmental Engineering (ICCOEE). ICESC is held under the banner of World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON2022) from 1 to2 December 2022 at Borneo Convention Centre, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. This proceeding contains papers presented by academics and industrial practitioners showcasing the latest advancements and findings in civil engineering areas with an emphasis on emerging smart cities for the ultimate shape of urban living in the near future. GOOD DESIGN IN ARCHITECTURE NOW. One of the most important quite dominant processes in architecture is design process, and the goal of architecture design is to obtain good design. Good design has double meaning, aesthetic and ethic. In architecture the two should be united as a single goal that a design process should strive for. 1st Warmadewa International Conference on Science, Technology and Humanity will be an annual event hosted by Warmadewa Research Institution, Universitas Warmadewa. In the direction of a new life order during pandemic COVID-19, Science, technology and humanity especially in ecotourism is a crucial topic to address, this is a momentum to bring together various critical views and thoughts from various fields of science related to strategies that can be done in developing and solving ecotourism resilience during pandemic COVID-19 in Science, technology and humanity study.The conference invites delegates from across Indonesian and is usually attended by more than 100 participants from university academics, researchers, practitioners, and professionals across a wide range of industries.

This book reveals the ‘epistemic imposition’ of architectural ideas and practices by colonists from the Netherlands in the Dutch East Indies from the late-19th century onwards, exploring the ways in which this came to shape the profession up to the present day in what is now known as Indonesia. The author investigates the scope of these interventions by Dutch colonial agents in relation to existing Javanese building practices, pursuing two main lines of enquiry. The first is to examine the methods of dissemination of Dutch-taught technical knowledge and skills across the Dutch East Indies. The second is to scrutinise the effects of this dissemination upon the formation of architectural knowledge and practice within the colony. Throughout this book, the argument is made that what took place in architecture in the Dutch East Indies involved a process of disseminating building knowledge as a form of ‘epistemic imposition’ upon the indigenous citizens of the colony – in other words, as an effective instrument of Dutch colonial power. This book will be of interest to architecture academics and students interested in developing a broader global understanding of architecture, especially those interested in decolonising the teaching of architectural history and theory.
