In The Garden Of Good And Evil

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Order, elegance, beauty. Each of these tenets is represented by a fictional character—Martians referred to as “the three graces”—in this dystopian novella. In the Garden of Good and Evil brings together six scientists struggling to unearth the roots of Mars’ downfall from the utopian planet it once was. Led by Professor Lotus Latus, the trio of best friends and young scientists, Jin-Jin, Be-Kas, and Fos-D embark on a critical journey to understand the true and correct meanings of good and evil. They first ponder the basic evolutionary brain chemistry observing a deer in a garden of dahlias and other plants, observing how it instinctively knows what to eat or avoid. But one tree may be key to all understanding. Their interstellar exploration finds Jin-Jin returning to planet Earth on a reconnaissance mission to bring intelligence back to the team. They offer and analyze theories and one case study, in particular: why a strange tree called Uvariopsis dicaprio (actually named for actor Leonardo DiCaprio) with flowers growing from its trunk has become a symbol of authentic good on Earth—worthy of extreme measures to save it—while the annihilation of all living organisms including humankind is not only possible but clearly probable. Although In the Garden of Good and Evil is a work of fiction, author Donald Lang, PhD, plumbs the depths of science to underpin the imminent realities facing our world, particularly with regard to the disintegration of human rights (explored in his recently published treatise, Never Again: Why Human Rights Charters Fail to Fulfill Their Mandates) while climate change remains a threat, destroying the world as we know it. As humans, our failure to understand the real meaning of good and evil for the betterment of everyone, and how it relates to human rights, can be found within our brain chemistry that enables us to discern and embrace order, elegance, and beauty.

Economics Of Good And Evil

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Tomas Sedlacek has shaken the study of economics as few ever have. Named one of the "Young Guns" and one of the "five hot minds in economics" by the Yale Economic Review, he serves on the National Economic Council in Prague, where his provocative writing has achieved bestseller status. How has he done it? By arguing a simple, almost heretical proposition: economics is ultimately about good and evil. In The Economics of Good and Evil, Sedlacek radically rethinks his field, challenging our assumptions about the world. Economics is touted as a science, a value-free mathematical inquiry, he writes, but it's actually a cultural phenomenon, a product of our civilization. It began within philosophy--Adam Smith himself not only wrote The Wealth of Nations, but also The Theory of Moral Sentiments--and economics, as Sedlacek shows, is woven out of history, myth, religion, and ethics. "Even the most sophisticated mathematical model," Sedlacek writes, "is, de facto, a story, a parable, our effort to (rationally) grasp the world around us." Economics not only describes the world, but establishes normative standards, identifying ideal conditions. Science, he claims, is a system of beliefs to which we are committed. To grasp the beliefs underlying economics, he breaks out of the field's confines with a tour de force exploration of economic thinking, broadly defined, over the millennia. He ranges from the epic of Gilgamesh and the Old Testament to the emergence of Christianity, from Descartes and Adam Smith to the consumerism in Fight Club. Throughout, he asks searching meta-economic questions: What is the meaning and the point of economics? Can we do ethically all that we can do technically? Does it pay to be good? Placing the wisdom of philosophers and poets over strict mathematical models of human behavior, Sedlacek's groundbreaking work promises to change the way we calculate economic value.

Thinking About Good And Evil

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

2022 Top Five Reference Book from Academy of Parish Clergy The most comprehensive book on the topic, Thinking about Good and Evil traces the most salient Jewish ideas about why innocent people seem to suffer, why evil individuals seem to prosper, and God's role in such matters of (in)justice, from antiquity to the present. Starting with the Bible and Apocrypha, Rabbi Wayne Allen takes us through the Talmud; medieval Jewish philosophers and Jewish mystical sources; the Ba'al Shem Tov and his disciples; early modern thinkers such as Spinoza, Mendelssohn, and Luzzatto; and, finally, modern thinkers such as Cohen, Buber, Kaplan, and Plaskow. Each chapter analyzes individual thinkers' arguments and synthesizes their collective ideas on the nature of good and evil and questions of justice. Allen also exposes vastly divergent Jewish thinking about the Holocaust: traditionalist (e.g., Ehrenreich), revisionist (e.g., Rubenstein, Jonas), and deflective (e.g., Soloveitchik, Wiesel). Rabbi Allen's engaging, accessible volume illuminates well-known, obscure, and novel Jewish solutions to the problem of good and evil.

The Soul Of Nietzsche S Beyond Good And Evil

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents a provocative new interpretation of Beyond Good and Evil, arguably Nietzsche's most important work. The problem is that it appears to express merely a loosely connected set of often questionable opinions. Can Nietzsche really be an important philosopher if this is his most important book? Maudemarie Clark and David Dudrick address this question with a close reading that emphasizes how Nietzsche writes. They argue that the first part of Beyond Good and Evil presents coherent and interconnected arguments for subtle and well-thought-out positions on traditional issues. Nietzsche's infamous doctrine of the will to power turns out to be a compelling account of the structure and origin of the human soul. And although he rejects some aspects of traditional philosophy, Nietzsche's aim is to show how philosophy's traditional aspirations to seek both the true and the good can be fulfilled. Beyond Good and Evil turns out to be a major work of philosophy and Nietzsche's masterpiece.
