With the general consensus on sustainable development worldwide, the balance between nature conservation and poverty eradication has become an inevitable choice. Biodiversity (including ecosystem diversity, species diversity, and genetic diversity) refers to the ecological complex formed by living organisms as well as their surrounding environment. Biodiversity provides ecosystem services essential for human well-being and is also interrelated with regional socio-economic development. Protected areas are the most direct and effective initiative to conserve biodiversity while increasing evidence shows that the services provided by intact and functioning ecosystems in protected areas are also of great value to human livelihoods, health, and well-being. Therefore, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development within and around protected areas have become a central topic in the field of conservation ecology. With this aim in mind, we would like to invite scholars to share novel findings on biodiversity conservation and the sustainable development of protected areas. The research topic will cover progress in the maintaining and sustainable use of different features of biodiversity (ecosystems, animals, plants, micro-organisms, etc.). We welcome contributions to the fundamental theories, technologies and approaches, and practices, toward a better understanding of the relationship between biodiversity conservation and regional development within and around protected areas.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas assembles twelve topics from around the world, illustrating the complexities and promise of addressing the biodiversity crisis. Authors from Mongolia, Africa, India, Canada, Iraq, and the United States dwell on particular aspects and challenges relevant to those regions. Lessons and approaches from interesting localities, coupled with global analyses give the reader a synthetic view of emerging problems. The opportunities for understanding common issues across different geographies abound, such as comparing local conservation in sub-Saharan Africa with a distribution of very small protected areas in Massachusetts. Several topics will be of immediate interest to policymakers. The book is illustrated with numerous color maps and figures and the authors strove for clear, uncomplicated writing. Recognizing the increasing rate of species loss on a global scale and that neither pollution nor ecosystems respects political boundaries, cooperation on many different levels is required to conserve biodiversity. Loss of biological diversity through the extinction of species, the conversion and degradation of natural habitats, and the disruption of ecological processes, is occurring throughout the world at an unprecendented rate. As species and their habitats disappear, so do products of present and future value, genes with which to improve crop varieties and livestock, and the natural resiliencies of the world's living resources to respond to climatic and enviornmental change. Nowhere else is the loss of biodiversity expected to be higher during the coming decades than in the Asia-Pacific region. The loss of biodiversity is irreversible. Recognizing this, the Asia Environment Division prepared this paper which is intended to identify priority areas of investment in the Asia-Pacific region. The paper accepts the importance of biodiversity conservation and suggests that policy change coupled with the establishment of protected area systems will be critical to success. A wide range of interventions will be needed to support these efforts toward conserving biodiversity - interventions involving national and local governments, national and international nongovernmental organizations and, most importantly, local people. The strategy defined in this paper is intended to complement existing national and international initiatives and to build partnerships in conservation for the 1990s.

As the world faces a biodiversity crisis, the protection of important natural areas and areas that are priorities for ecological restoration is becoming increasingly important. Global biodiversity targets under the Convention on Biological Diversity are proposing the protection of 30% of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. Privately protected areas are often under-recognized, despite their significant contributions to biodiversity conservation. These areas, which meet the IUCN definition of a protected area and are under private governance, are highly diverse and involve a wide range of people and organizations. This includes governance by individuals and groups of individuals; non-governmental organizations; corporations; for-profit owners such as ecotourism companies; research entities such as universities and field stations; or religious entities. As a result, they experience a set of challenges and opportunities that are often distinct from those faced by government protected areas.

Protected Area Governance and Management presents a compendium of original text, case studies and examples from across the world, by drawing on the literature, and on the knowledge and experience of those involved in protected areas. The book synthesises current knowledge and cutting-edge thinking from the diverse branches of practice and learning relevant to protected area governance and management. It is intended as an investment in the skills and competencies of people and consequently, the effective governance and management of protected areas for which they are responsible, now and into the future. The global success of the protected area concept lies in its shared vision to protect natural and cultural heritage for the long term, and organisations such as International Union for the Conservation of Nature are a unifying force in this regard. Nonetheless, protected areas are a socio-political phenomenon and the ways that nations understand, govern and manage them is always open to contest and debate. The book aims to enlighten, educate and above all to challenge readers to think deeply about protected areas—their future and their past, as well as their present. The book has been compiled by 169 authors and deals with all aspects of protected area governance and management. It provides information to support capacity development training of protected area field officers, managers in charge and executive level managers.

This set of Guidelines is aimed at protected area staff, conservation scientists, managers and stakeholders involved in the management of protected areas in Turkey. It provides substantial support to protected area planners, decisionmakers and managers, and staff of the MAF, helping them to assess and improve management effectiveness for protected areas and monitor regularly the management effectiveness of these unique and valuable sites. Protected areas are the cornerstone of biodiversity, habitat and ecosystem services conservation. However, unprecedented global losses due mainly to human activities are exerting pressure on these sites. Achieving long-term sustainability and the expected benefits of these areas requires effective management, a key to which is a well-prepared management plan. A second vital component for effective protected area management – in addition to legal and administrative regulations and management plans – is the availability of quantitatively and qualitatively equipped human resources. The third element necessary to ensuring that management and protection goals are achieved in a protected area is the establishment of participative opportunities and the integration of purposeful processes that include all relevant stakeholders. The mechanism for management effectiveness assessment evaluates the presence and efficiency of all of these aspects.
