BOOK EXCERPT:
The history of eugenics and racial nationalism in Central and Southeast Europe is a neglected topic of analysis in contemporary scholarship. Moreover, national historiographies in Central and Southeast Europe have either marginalized eugenics and racial nationalism or deemed them incompatible with their respective national traditions. Accordingly, this volume has a two-fold ambition: to excavate the hitherto unknown eugenic movements in Central and Southeast Europe and to explain their relationship with racism, nationalism and anti-Semitism. On the one hand, the historiographic perspective substantiated in this volume connects developments in the history of racial anthropology, genetics and eugenics with political ideologies such as racial nationalism and anti-Semitism; on the other hand, it contests the 'Sonderweg' approach adopted by scholars dealing these phenomena in Central and Southeast Europe by arguing that concerns with eugenics and race were as widely disseminated in these regions as they were in Western Europe and North America. BOOK EXCERPT:
Many books deal with New Mexico's past, but the twelve original essays here reinterpret that history for the first time from a Chicano perspective. Self-determination, resistance, and cultural maintenance are the recurring themes in the lives and struggles of Nuevomexicanos from 1848 to the present. On a more fundamental level, the clash has been over modernisation -- how the Spanish language, folk traditions, and land grants can survive as a heritage for future generations amid English, new and secular values, and real estate booms and speculation. Nuevomexicanos have confronted colonialism, ethnocentrism, and racism throughout their history. But as these essays make clear, pride in Spanish descent runs deep in New Mexico and has led to a vibrancy unmatched in any other region in the United States. Nuevomexicanos have not simply survived or endured. They have secured their influence through the highest level of education among all Chicanos in the United States, through greater political representation at the local and national level-and in both major parties-than in any other state, and through a culture that has simultaneously resisted and adapted to change.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"Mobility and migration, hardly new phenomena in Southeast Asia, raise intriguing questions about experiences of place, home and belonging. The term 'homeland' can refer to the modern nation of citizenship, but often 'homelands' may be places of origin socially memorialised in people's lives in far-distant locations. 'Homeland' may even refer to a sense of belonging painfully re-worked with respect to these new locations. The essays in this volume contribute to developing an understanding of how 'horizons of home' - spatial, temporal and political - inflect home-making in the present and describe social processes of departure, displacement and emplacement in contemporary island Southeast Asia."--BOOK JACKET.
