This document contains nine FAO commissioned papers on cage aquaculture including a global overview, one country review for China, and seven regional reviews for Asia (excluding China), northern Europe, the Mediterranean, sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, northern America and Oceania. The content of the papers is based on the broad experience and sound knowledge of the authors with advice and help received from many experts and reviewers around the globe. The papers were presented to a distinguished audience of some 300 participants from over 25 countries during the FAO Special Session on Cage Aquaculture - Regional Reviews and Global Overview at the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS) Second International Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in Asia (CAA2), held in Hangzhou, China, from 3 to 8 July 2006.

An experimental investigation to determine the relative merits of bronze and nodular iron as cage materials for cylindrical-roller bearings was conducted using four identical 75-millimeter-bore outer-race-riding cage-type cylindrical-roller bearings (tow with bronze cages and two with nodular iron cages). The test bearings were operated over a range of DN values (product of bearing bore in mm and shaft speed in rpm) from 300,00 to 2,100,000, oil flows from 2 to 8 pounds per minute, and loads from 7 to 1613 pounds.

Over the past few years, it has become more and more obvious that fish farming will become increasingly important in the future. As fish farming moves into its industrial phase, technology will be an important factor in determining its successful development. It is therefore important for scientists & representatives from the aquaculture industry to meet to define state of the art and explore future development of fish farming technology for different fish species. 81 papers and abstracts were presented at the conference. The proceedings reflect the different sections of the conference: the plenum sessions and three parallel sessions: Juvenile marine fish, open production plants, closed production plants and poster sessions.

For many years the use of chemical agents such as pesticides and herbicides has been effective in controlling the many varieties of pests that infest both agricultural crops and backyard gardens. However, these pests are gradually becoming resistant to these agents, because the agents themselves are acting as selective factors making the pests better and better able to resist and persist. As a result, the use of biological controlling agents is increasing. This book is a comprehensive and authoritative handbook of biological control.

Advances in Spinal Fusion reveals a new generation of materials and devices for enhanced operations in spinal fusion. Cage culture is an established and profitable aquaculture system in many countries but it is a relatively complex culture system that is still in its infancy in the Africa region. This expert workshop was convened with the aim of identifying the key issues for sustainable cage culture in the region and developing a framework of good management practice. It concluded that although cage aquaculture could be an important development opportunity, it will require an effective policy framework to ensure that structural constraints to development are overcome and that development is both equitable and sustainable.

Tilapia culture is currently practised in 95 countries all over the world and the number is expected to increase. This book discusses in detail the principles and practices of tilapia culture in the world. It covers all the vital issues of farmed tilapia including: the biology, environmental requirements, semi-intensive culture, intensive culture systems, feed and feeding, reproduction and breeding, spawning and larval rearing, stress and diseases, harvesting and marketing and the role of tilapia culture in rural development. Over the past few years, there has been significant growth and development in the salmon farming industry. In order to be successful, practitioners not only need to know how the salmon lives and survives in the wild but, amongst other things have knowledge of disease, production processes, economics and marketing. The Handbook of Salmon Farming is a practical guide that covers everything the practitioner needs to know, and will also be of great use to academics and students of aquaculture and fish biology. The editors have invited contributions from experts in academia, the fish industry and government to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive handbook.

Normative Biology, Husbandry, and Models, the third volume in the four volume set, The Mouse in Biomedical Research, encompasses 23 chapters whose contents provide a broad overview on the laboratory mouse's normative biology, husbandry, and its use as a model in biomedical research. This consists of chapters on behavior, physiology, reproductive physiology, anatomy, endocrinology, hematology, and clinical chemistry. Other chapters cover management, as well as nutrition, gnotobiotics and disease surveillance. There are also individual chapters describing the mouse as a model for the study of aging, eye research, neurodegenerative diseases, convulsive disorders, diabetes, and cardiovascular and skin diseases. Chapters on imaging techniques and the use of the mouse in assays of biological products are also included.
