BOOK EXCERPT:

Based around the core curriculum for specialist trainees in cardiology, Oxford Case Histories in Cardiology contains 50 well-structured, peer-reviewed cases gathered from the Oxford Hospitals, comprehensively covering the various disorders of the cardiac system. Each case history is followed by questions on important aspects of the diagnosis, interpretation of investigations, and management. The answers are accompanied by a detailed discussion, including the differential diagnosis where relevant and other clinically important aspects of the condition. The book contains numerous illustrations of echocardiographic, radiographic and electrocardiographic data. The list of cases by diagnosis and category according to the cardiology curriculum from the JRCPTB and the extensive index allows the book to be used for revision and reference. The book will be of particular use to post-membership trainees who are preparing for specialty knowledge based assessments in cardiology and acute general medicine in the UK and Europe, and will also be of interest to those who wish to improve their skills in diagnosis and management of a broad range of cardiac diseases.

Advances In Noninvasive Cardiology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Many noninvasive examination methods of the heart have not held out against the invasive methods, which modern cardiac therapy, surgically or with catheterization, requires. They have disappeared completely or are only used by isolated groups of researchers. However, there is an obvious tendency to apply the invasive procedures as the last diagnostic possibility. In the attempt to select clinically relevant methods, the expert authors of this book demonstrate that echocardiography, expanded with contrast and Doppler, has been developed into one of the most important noninvasive methods. The results with tissue characterization show that the possibilities of this method have not yet been fully explored. Nuclear procedures are widely used, although they should only be applied in direct connection with clinical cardiology. The new lead methods of the ecg, such as ecg-mapping, show that standard electrocardiography of electrical functions is not yet fully exploited. The rapidly developing method of computer tomography is also being applied to cardiology. Since nuclear magnetic resonance requires extensive equipment con struction, its future is as yet unsure. Of course, a book like this does not intend to treat the subject of noninvasive cardiology in extensive detail. Established methods like standard electrocardio graphy, phonocardiography and sphygmography are not discussed. The aim of this book is rather to demonstrate the trend of present developments in the field. Sports Cardiology Casebook

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Comparatively little is known about the risk of sudden death associated with exercise in young competitive athletes, and whether the benefits of sports activity outweigh the hazards of exercise-related fatal events is a clinical dilemma. This is only a small part of the story, however, as there are considerable effects of exercise whether it be at a competitive level or on a ‘leisure’ level on patients of all ages. This in itself is of massive importance to the cardiac patient population as exercise is a key component of effective recovery and recommended as central in the prevention of much cardiac disease.
