BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is a journey through the cosmos in search of consciousness. We think consciously of what we think, feel and decide with our brain, but is our consciousness really unique? This theme takes us along an interesting journey through cosmology, relativity, particle physics, quantum physics, chaos theory, information theory, brain science, evolution, intelligent design, the origin and history of religion, the theory of the self, free will, and much more. The main theme of this book is the pantheism of Spinoza, our great compatriot. The scientific results of our time fully vindicate him, 300 years after his death. The book is a gesture of the natural sciences to the metaphysical without becoming too woolly.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The study of complex systems has attracted a broad range of researchers from many disciplines spanning both the hard and soft sciences. In the Autumn of 1997, 300 of these researchers came together for the First International Conference on Complex Systems. The proceedings of this conference is the first book in the New England Complex Systems Institute Series on Complexity and includes more than 100 presentations and papers on topics like evolution, emergence, complexity, self-organization, scaling, informatics, time series, emergence of mind, and engineering of complex systems.

BOOK EXCERPT:
For centuries, humankind has believed that the world with all its form and structure was created by supernatural forces. In recent decades science has shaken these beliefs with the discovery of the exciting possibility of a self-created and self-creating world ? of self-organization. Synergetics endeavours to reveal the intimate mechanisms of self-organization. The transitions from chaos to order, the nature of self-organization, the various approaches to it and certain philosophical inferences are outlined. Synergetics thus represents a remarkable confluence of many strands of thought, and has become a paradigm in modern culture. This book exposes the reader to striking new vistas in physics and mathematics, chemistry and biology, social sciences and philosophy ? all interlocked around the concept of self-organization.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The nature of this book is to emphasize the inherent complexity and richness of the human experience of change. Now, the author believes there to be an acceptable "scientific" explanation for this phenomona. Explored here are 30 years of studies to describe nonlinear dynamics, today termed either chaos theory or complexity theory. The connotations of both theories are discussed at length. Offering social scientists validation in their attempts to describe and define phenomona of a previously ineffable nature, this book explores chaos' implications for psychology and the social sciences. It describes the benefits psychology can glean from using ideas in chaos theory and applying them to psychology in general, individual psycho-therapy, couples therapy, and community psychology, and also considers possible directions for research and application.

The author feels that the spirit in our workplaces is becoming a little tattered, and showing signs of "Soul Pollution". Those in the advanced stages may be plagued by exhaustion, stress, and the abuse of just about anything - spouses, stubstances, and fellow workers. This text examines the world of spirit/consciousness in organizations and offers to help those who find themselves dreading another day in the job. The author draws on theories of self-organizing systems to reveal how spirit shows up in new organizational forms.

BOOK EXCERPT:
God appears in the mind of a physicist and an existentialist in a puzzling manner, which creates shock and astonishment that the scientist cannot overcome for the rest of his life. Since then he gets confused about finding answers about the true nature of the reality and the mystery of the existence of God. A highly creative person, with wide knowledge in many fields of science and arts, grapples all his life to understand these personal experiences, which defy all scientific knowledge and reason. Whenever he manages to harness enough doubts and attempts to get rid of the supernatural world, which keeps his life a captive of a weird mental phenomenon that cannot be understood by any intellectual reasoning, God appears again and again. He gives messages with such clarity of “illumination” that all defenses of reason, which a scientist may erect with his intellectual capacity, fall apart. Judging from scientific perspective many neurologists would like to interpret such mental phenomenon as caused by abnormal brain activities, and explain God as a delusion rising from malfunctioning of the brain. The book will throw lights upon the questions: “Do these experiences represent a case of a brain damage, resulting in wrong neural circuitry, which generate the messages of God in the mind, or does there truly exist God, who is beyond intellectual comprehension of even a very sophisticated human mind? After experiencing continuous dilemma and conflicts for more than fifty years the nuclear scientist and a cosmologist, who was a believer of the western existential philosophy in his young age, remains at bay without finding any convincing answer. This book reveals a hidden world which has disturbed, puzzled and created agony and despair on one side, and illumined the mind with knowledge and vision, not accessible through intellectual process of the mind, on the other hand. It is a story of pain and joy, suffering followed by profound ebullience of a spirit which is one with the cosmos and resides in us.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume is concerned with the theoretical description of patterns and instabilities and their relevance to physics, chemistry, and biology. More specifically, the theme of the work is the theory of nonlinear physical systems with emphasis on the mechanisms leading to the appearance of regular patterns of ordered behavior and chaotic patterns of stochastic behavior. The aim is to present basic concepts and current problems from a variety of points of view. In spite of the emphasis on concepts, some effort has been made to bring together experimental observations and theoretical mechanisms to provide a basic understanding of the aspects of the behavior of nonlinear systems which have a measure of generality. Chaos theory has become a real challenge to physicists with very different interests and also in many other disciplines, of which astronomy, chemistry, medicine, meteorology, economics, and social theory are already embraced at the time of writing. The study of chaos-related phenomena has a truly interdisciplinary charac ter and makes use of important concepts and methods from other disciplines. As one important example, for the description of chaotic structures the branch of mathematics called fractal geometry (associated particularly with the name of Mandelbrot) has proved invaluable. For the discussion of the richness of ordered structures which appear, one relies on the theory of pattern recognition. It is relevant to mention that, to date, computer studies have greatly aided the analysis of theoretical models describing chaos.
