The body of a doctor is found floating in a lake by a claims man and his two young sons. The investigator's company had written a large insurance policy on him a year before which stated that if he committed suicide within two years, the company could deny payment. The case was assigned to the young claims man to clear up the mystery and this took him on a long and complicated journey. He uncovered a witness who lived in a cave that overlooked the river where he went in. With the help of the hermit, he was able to solve the mystery.

This study describes the usage of subclauses and participial clauses in Xenophon’s Hellenica and Anabasis, with additional examples from other texts, using a text grammar-oriented approach, which can map more factors underlying the distribution of these clauses, and offers a more satisfactory explanation of a larger number of instances than is possible using the traditional sentence-level approach. The discourse-analytic description of the different clause types focuses on how relations are coded by means of subordinating conjunctions, the differences in form and function as discourse boundary markers between preposed, sentence-initially placed subclauses and participles, and the differences between clause types with respect to the information flow in on-going discourse. The discussion of many examples from the work of Xenophon makes this book interesting for both linguists and classical philologists.

This book combines a detailed examination of the history of the Supremacy Clause with a comprehensive consideration of all aspects of Supremacy Clause Doctrine. It explores how the Supremacy Clause makes federal law the supreme Law of the Land, so that federal law overrides conflicting state law. This work also looks at how the Supreme Court frequently requires not supremacy but equality when applying the Supremacy Clause by invalidating state laws that discriminate against the federal government. This volume gives a detailed history of the Supremacy Clause by tracing the origins of federal supremacy from colonial days. It gives particular attention to the evolution of the Supremacy Clause in the Constitutional Convention and discussions of the Clause during the ratification debates. Foundational decisions of the Supreme Court interpreting the Clause are discussed as well as the role of the Clause during critical confrontations between states and federal government. This work also considers in detail the doctrinal role of the Supremacy Clause today by discussing contemporary topics and recent controversies surrounding them.

Austin’s words on page 1 of his seminal work How to do things with words are valid for this study on clause typing in the Old Irish verbal complex: “The phenomenon to be discussed is very widespread and obvious, and it cannot fail to have been already noticed, at least here and there, by others. Yet I have not found attention paid to it specifically”. Old Irish, a regular V1 language, morphologically distinguishes six clause types, to wit, declarative, relative, wh- and polar interrogative, responsive and imperative clause types. After discussing the constituency of the Old Irish verbal complex and the pragmatically marked orders, i.e. cleft-sentence and left-dislocation, the form, function, paradigmatic consistency and syntax of those clause types are then analysed in detail. The other main issues of this study are the descriptively adequate paradigm of clause types and the interaction of clause typing with subordination and with non-verbal predication in Old Irish. This monograph offers a comprehensive view of clause typing, its morphological expression and related phenomena in the earliest Insular Celtic language, and may also contribute to the general consideration of these topics in both the typological and diachronic perspectives.

The languages of the world make use of a variety of techniques for describing events and putting sentences together. This volume takes a typological approach to clause chaining, a fascinating feature of the grammar of hundreds of languages outside Europe, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, East Africa, across Central Asia, and the Americas. Clause chains consist of several dependent clauses and one main clause, and are used to organize discourse and to foreground or background events and participants; they often go together with switch-reference marking, an indication of whether upcoming subjects will be co-referential with preceding subjects or not. The introductory chapter features a discussion of the typological properties of clause chaining, with a brief overview of previous approaches to and investigations of clause chains followed by an overview of their recurrent grammatical features; it ends with an appendix featuring notes for fieldworkers. The first part of the book explores general issues in clause chaining, including prosody, acquisition, and language contact and history; later parts then examine clause chaining and related phenomena in a wide range of languages from around the world.
