Community Empowerment Sustainable Cities And Transformative Economies

BOOK EXCERPT:

This edited volume presents the conference papers from the 1st International Conference on Business, Economics, Management, and Sustainability (BEMAS), organized by the Centre for International Trade and Business in Asia (CITBA) at James Cook University. This book argues that the orthodox methods of external risks, climate change adaptation plans, and sustainable economic growth in cities are no longer adequate. These methods, so far, have not only ignored the ongoing structural changes associated with economic development but also failed to account for evolving industries’ composition and the emergence of new comparative advantages and skills. Specifically, this book looks at the vulnerable communities and exposed areas, particularly in urban areas, that tend to experience higher susceptibility to external risks (such as climate change, natural disasters, and public health emergencies) have been largely ignored in incremental adaptation plans. Vulnerable communities and areas not only require different adaptive responses to climate risk but also possess unlocked adaptive capacity that can motivate different patterns of sustainable development to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda. It is essential, therefore, to view transformative growth and fundamental reorientation of economic resources as integral parts of the solution. Social disorganisation and vulnerability are other undesired outcomes of the unpredictable and widespread external economic shocks. This is due to a sudden and tough competition between members of society to acquire precious resources, most of which may be depleted during unprecedented events such as natural disasters or pandemics resulting in an even more chaotic and disorganised conditions.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Travel is widely acknowledged as an activity that increases individuals' levels of well-being. Nevertheless, the relationship between happiness and tourism is still a matter of investigation. Despite the overall beneficial effects of travel on happiness levels, tourism is not an activity with solely positive implications on peoples' lives. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how happiness manifests through tourism and how it can be expanded to different tourism actors, such as tourists, workers, and communities. The search for ways and methods to enhance the levels of happiness and well-being has grown significantly in recent years. Happiness and quality of life are timely issues and have become even more relevant due to the significant impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rebuilding and Restructuring the Tourism Industry: Infusion of Happiness and Quality of Life is a critical references source that examines the fundamental relationship between tourism, happiness, and quality of life. This book discusses relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest findings from empirical research in happiness, well-being, and quality-of-life-related tourism. Focusing on topics such as neurotourism, PERMA theory, the economics of happiness, tourism employment opportunity, and overtourism, this book will intrigue scholars working in hospitality, tourism, destination management, economics, marketing, sociology, anthropology, and health sciences as well as managers, travel agencies, restaurateurs, hotel managers, and professionals who want to improve their understanding of the relationship between tourism and happiness, providing them with tools to develop better and sustainable practices for the sector.

Environmental Sustainability

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In 1994, representatives from all over the world met in Costa Rica to discuss the impact of ecological economics on developing countries. That groundbreaking conference laid the foundation for this new collection of research on environmental sustainability. While most discussions on sustainable development focus on the industrialized nations, Environmental Sustainability: Practical Global Applications takes a different angle: it presents the views of the developing countries themselves on issues such as wildlife resources in Nambia, timber production in Costa Rica, property rights and land reform in South Africa, and other steps being taken to implement environmentally sustainable economies around the world. This is an ideal text for students of natural and social sciences, development professionals and entrepreneurs seeking opportunities for ecologically sustainable businesses. Academics will find it useful as a source of current research and for making new contacts in the field. For anyone interested in exploring the link between man and his environment-specifically, the relationship between economics and ecology- Environmental Sustainability, is a must.
