High on the Southern Alps of New Zealand lies a fallen man, like ‘a black exclamation mark on a white page, Kiwi-noir face down in the snow’. Is he still alive? This funny, fearless, thought-provoking novel trains its sights on us. Kerry-Anne is kind, unlike her foster sister Joleen, who is a different kind of person altogether. Being locked down for Joleen will mean behind bars. For Kerry-Anne’s ex-husband, the National MP Lyall Hull, lockdown will also take on a new meaning when he goes on a cycle trip instead of staying at home. From lockdown in the Bay of Islands, Kerry-Anne tries to work out what both are up to. Will anyone come up smelling of roses? ‘Johnson has always had an eye for topicality’ — Steve Braunias

At What Cost

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

I have been doing my family tree for well over thirty years; it is quite vast. It got to the stage when revising its content, I realized it was all names and dates basically, probably quite boring especially to the younger generations. Therefore I went back to the beginning and started to research individuals and their times and events, then adding them to the tree. I then found it was like reading a book and was quite interesting, with the result that I wrote a completely separate story from the tree. I then added photos that were also of interest to the content. The book starts in the mid-1600s, tracing a fishing family right up to 1947, including hardships, disasters, tragedies, WWI, and WWII. But the story can equally apply to anybody with fishing roots (just change the names). I think it is a heritage to be recorded and should not be lost.

Practical Skipper

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

When you learn how to skipper a yacht the practical courses cover a whole range of activities, from passage planning to pilotage and berthing. The way you learn about these elements on a course is usually like this: – the briefing, where the instructor prepares you for the exercise. He should explain what we're trying to achieve, how it's going to work, and what the skipper and crew need to do – the practical activity – you all have a go – the debriefing afterwards, where you discuss what happened and how it went, and take notes of what to remember. At the end of the course, you will have had a go at all the important stuff you have to do in the course of sailing the yacht, but you'll probably struggle to remember all the essential bits: the all-important briefing, and the sequence of things you have to remember. This book is the answer. Containing all the author's own briefing notes and concise explanations, it covers every activity a skipper will need to carry out. Using bullet points, handy checklists and simple diagrams, this book is a unique resource for all skippers – reassurance for new skippers that they haven't forgotten something vital, and a reminder for the more experienced. These are the notes you wish you'd written when you attended your sailing course, and had to hand when revising for your exam or refreshing your knowledge later.
