BOOK EXCERPT:
Despite their rich fossil history, there are only four surviving species of sirenians or sea cows, the only fully aquatic herbivorous mammals. The three species of manatees and the dugong live in the coastal waters rivers and lakes of more than 80 tropical and subtropical countries and are all on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This book examines sirenian conservation biology through the lens of their behavioral ecology and ethology. Sirenian feeding, diving, movement, social and reproductive behaviors are reviewed by an international team of scientists from eight countries, with an emphasis on data gathered in the past 15 years.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Class Mammalia is amazingly diverse, ranging from whales to marsupials to bats to primates. The more than 5,400 species occupy many habitats, with mammals present on all the continents. They are rare only on Antarctica and a few isolated islands. Mammals present a complex set of conservation and management issues. Some species have become more numerous with the rise of human populations, while others have been extirpated or nearly so—such as the Caribbean monk seal, the thylacine, the Chinese river dolphin, and the Pyrenean ibex. In this new edition of their classic textbook, George A. Feldhamer and his colleagues cover the many aspects of mammalogy. Thoroughly revised and updated, this edition includes treatments of the most recent significant findings in ordinal-level mammalian phylogeny and taxonomy; special topics such as parasites and diseases, conservation, and domesticated mammals; interrelationships between mammalian structure and function; and the latest molecular techniques used to study mammals. Instructors: email mammalogy@press.jhu.edu for a free instructor resource disc containing all 510 illustrations printed in Mammalogy: Adaptation, Diversity, Ecology, third edition.

BOOK EXCERPT:
HOW NATURE MATTERS presents an original theory of nature's value based on part—whole relations. James argues that when natural things have cultural value, they do not always have it as means to valuable ends. In many cases, they have value as parts of valuable wholes — as parts of traditions, for instance, or cultural identities. James develops his theory by investigating twelve real-world cases, ranging from the veneration of sacred trees to the hunting of dugongs. He also analyses some key policy-related debates and explores various fundamental issues in environmental philosophy, including the question of whether anything on earth qualifies as natural. This accessible, engagingly written book will be essential reading for all those who wish to understand the moral and metaphysical dimensions of environmental issues.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book provides insights into various aspects of marine faunal communities in India, which are extremely diverse due to the geomorphologic and climatic variations along the Indian coasts. Consisting of 30 chapters by experts in their respective fields, it is divided into two parts: · Part I: Tropical Marine Faunal Communities · Part II: Ecology and Conservation Part I highlights the diversity and distribution of Foraminifera; sponges associated with seagrass; Polychaeta; Opisthobranchia; oysters; copepods; horseshoe and brachyuran crabs; echinoderms; ascidians; fishes; fish parasites; and sea mammals. Topics of Part II include the status and environmental parameters of benthos; the status of coral reefs; the invasion of snowflake coral; the recovery of bleached corals; the socioeconomics and management of dugong; marine biodiversity conservation and management in India; the assessment of the marine fauna of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act; and marine biodiversity protected areas in India. This book will serve as a valuable reference work for marine scientists, as well as for environmental managers and policy makers.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Biometric analyses of well-localized specimens of the trilobite Dikelocephalus from the St. Lawrence Formation (Upper Cambrian), northern Mississippi Valley, suggest that all specimens belong to a single, highly variable morphospecies, D. minnesotensis. A complex pattern of ontogenetically-related and ontogeny-independent variation produced a mosaic of morphotypes, which show greater diversity than previously recorded within trilobite species. There is considerable variation within collections made from single beds. Variations of characters among collections are mosaic, and are clinal in some cases. Patterns of variation within Dikelocephalus cannot be related to lithofacies occurrence. There are no obvious temporal variations in D. minnesotensis within the St. Lawrence Formation, but some Dikelocephalus from the underlying Tunnel City Group may belong to a different taxon. The validity of this early taxon is questionable due to a lack of available material. The mosaic pattern of variation in Dikelocephalus mimics that documented at higher taxonomic levels in primitive libristomate trilobites, and helps explain difficulties in providing a workable taxonomy of primitive trilobites. Results caution proposition of evolutionary scenarios that do not take account of intraspecific variation. The recovery of dorsal shields of Dikelocephalus permits the first detailed reconstruction of the entire exoskeleton. The systematics of the genus is revised and twenty-five species are suppressed as junior synonyms of D. minnesotensis.
