Smart configuration means understanding which hardware components best integrate together and how those components should be set up to best deliver their unique set of services. All in all, smarter configuration facilitates a better Media Center experience for everyone. Section 2 Media Center's Best Kept Secrets Once the Media Center has been set up and is integrated into the required environment, the next thing a user needs to understand is where the real power of MCE lies. At first glance it's not at all apparent. This section delves into the depths of using and really leveraging the essence of MCE. Section 3 Taking Media Center to the Next Level There are, as with most software solutions, things that MCE doesn't do that well (or at all). However, as is the case with all Microsoft platforms, MCE comes with its own API and is highly extensible. Many software developers have augmented the Media Center feature set with new and exciting enhancements that bolster its capabilities. This section details the author's preferences on essential additions to a MCE implementation including information on Xbox, PSP, and the iPod.

Writing Better Copy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Writing Better Copy is simple - it starts with opening this book. Writing Better Copy is a quick and easy read that will teach you how to write more effectively to convey your message quickly. Copywriting is simply the art of conveying a message from one person to another and the most important principle of copywriting is the ease and speed with which this message is communicated. When I first started working as a copywriter, I thought that I needed to use long words and complicated sentences to bamboozle readers into buying the products; that only long elegant prose would increase website conversions. I was wrong. Copywriting is about using the simplest words and sentences you can. People don’t read websites for the joy of reading, they read for information and if they don’t et it quickly they go somewhere else. Writing Better Copy cuts through the waffle and bumph and teaches you how to remove the unnecessary, trim away the excess and connect with your customers effectively. What this book teaches you: What you need to be a copywriter How to identify your audience when writing What is AIDA and how to use it in your writing The difference between the emotional sale and the logical purchase How to sell the sizzle and not the steak Finding what it is that really interests your potential customers Answering the “so what” question Should you write as you speak When to be funny in your writing Why your copy should be about “you” not “me” How to keep it simple, stupid Keeping things positive Creating a tone of voice Writing headlines, sublines and calls to action Writing for the web Editing your copy Proofreading techniques It took me years working as a copywriter to learn these strategies, with this book you can learn in about an hour what took me years to learn and cut straight to the good part. The part where you write better copy for your website and sell more of what you need to sell. Writing better copy is easy, the first step you take is by reading this book.

Wizardry

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The systematic analysis of baseball statistics, often called "sabermetrics," has evolved in recent years to resemble something of a science, attracting fans from diverse professional and educational backgrounds, all fascinated by the analysis itself and its insights into the game. But one problem has defied solution: estimating runs saved by fielders throughout history. Traditional statistics include errors and plays made, but not hits that could or should have been prevented. The latter can now be estimated using records of the location of every batted ball, but the underlying data exists only for recent seasons and has generally been withheld from the public. Now, in Wizardry, comes the long-awaited breakthrough. Drawing solely on freely available baseball statistics, Michael A. Humphreys shows how to apply classic statistical methods to estimate runs saved by fielders going back to 1893. Humphreys tests his results against other fielding measures, including published ratings based on proprietary batted ball location data, and explains their respective strengths and limitations. He also introduces a method for adjusting historical player ratings for increased competition due to population growth, integration, and international recruitment. Position by position, Humphreys identifies and profiles the greatest fielders of all time with anecdote-rich essays. Sabermetrics changed baseball and introduced a generation to the art of statistical inference. Wizardry makes the case for the most significant changes in historical player valuation in decades, while opening up new approaches for further exploration.
