Data structures and algorithms is a fundamental course in Computer Science, which enables learners across any discipline to develop the much-needed foundation of efficient programming, leading to better problem solving in their respective disciplines. A Textbook of Data Structures and Algorithms is a textbook that can be used as course material in classrooms, or as self-learning material. The book targets novice learners aspiring to acquire advanced knowledge of the topic. Therefore, the content of the book has been pragmatically structured across three volumes and kept comprehensive enough to help them in their progression from novice to expert. With this in mind, the book details concepts, techniques and applications pertaining to data structures and algorithms, independent of any programming language. It includes 181 illustrative problems and 276 review questions to reinforce a theoretical understanding and presents a suggestive list of 108 programming assignments to aid in the implementation of the methods covered.

This volume presents the proceedings of the fourth annual International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation, held in Hong Kong in December 1993.Numerous selected papers present original research in such areas as design and analysis of algorithms, computational complexity, and theory of computation. Topics covered include: - automata, languages, and computability, - combinatorial, graph, geometric, and randomized algorithms, - networks and distributed algorithms, - VLSIand parallel algorithms, - theory of learning and robotics, - number theory and robotics. Three invited papers are also included.

This first part presents chapters on models of computation, complexity theory, data structures, and efficient computation in many recognized sub-disciplines of Theoretical Computer Science.

This work is Volume II of a two-volume monograph on the theory of deterministic parsing of context-free grammars. Volume I, "Languages and Parsing" (Chapters 1 to 5), was an introduction to the basic concepts of formal language theory and context-free parsing. Volume II (Chapters 6 to 10) contains a thorough treat ment of the theory of the two most important deterministic parsing methods: LR(k) and LL(k) parsing. Volume II is a continuation of Volume I; together these two volumes form an integrated work, with chapters, theorems, lemmas, etc. numbered consecutively. Volume II begins with Chapter 6 in which the classical con structions pertaining to LR(k) parsing are presented. These include the canonical LR(k) parser, and its reduced variants such as the LALR(k) parser and the SLR(k) parser. The grammarclasses for which these parsers are deterministic are called LR(k) grammars, LALR(k) grammars and SLR(k) grammars; properties of these grammars are also investigated in Chapter 6. A great deal of attention is paid to the rigorous development of the theory: detailed mathematical proofs are provided for most of the results presented.

The mathematical theory of computation has given rise to two important ap proaches to the informal notion of "complexity": Kolmogorov complexity, usu ally a complexity measure for a single object such as a string, a sequence etc., measures the amount of information necessary to describe the object. Compu tational complexity, usually a complexity measure for a set of objects, measures the compuational resources necessary to recognize or produce elements of the set. The relation between these two complexity measures has been considered for more than two decades, and may interesting and deep observations have been obtained. In March 1990, the Symposium on Theory and Application of Minimal Length Encoding was held at Stanford University as a part of the AAAI 1990 Spring Symposium Series. Some sessions of the symposium were dedicated to Kolmogorov complexity and its relations to the computational complexity the ory, and excellent expository talks were given there. Feeling that, due to the importance of the material, some way should be found to share these talks with researchers in the computer science community, I asked the speakers of those sessions to write survey papers based on their talks in the symposium. In response, five speakers from the sessions contributed the papers which appear in this book.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Algorithms and Data Structures, WADS 2001, held in Providence, RI, USA in August 2001. The 40 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 89 submissions. Among the topics addressed are multiobjective optimization, computational graph theory, approximation, optimization, combinatorics, scheduling, Varanoi diagrams, packings, multi-party computation, polygons, searching, etc.

The book presents 40 full refereed papers selected from a total of 121 submissions together with invited papers by Preparata and Bilardi, Sharir, Toussaint, and Vitanyi and Li. Myocarditis and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy are being increasingly recognized as important causes of heart disease and heart failure. Immunological mechanisms have long been suspected as playing a role in thesediseases but direct evidence has been lacking. Recently, animal models have be- come available, in which myocarditis can be induced either by infection with cardiotropic viruses or by autoimmuniza- tion with heart-specific antigens. This book presents and analyzes the latest information obtained from experimental models, relating it to the practical problems of diagnosis and treatment of myocarditis.

It is only during the last decade that the functions of sinusoidal endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, hepatic stellate cells, pit cells and other intrahepatic lymphocytes have been better understood. The development of methods for isolation and co-culturing various types of liver cells has established that they communicate and cooperate via secretion of various intercellular mediators. This monograph summarizes multiple data that suggest the important role of cellular cross-talk for the functions of both normal and diseased liver.
