The Epistemology Of Deceit In A Postdigital Era

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This edited book collection offers strong theoretical and philosophical insight into how digital platforms and their constituent algorithms interact with belief systems to achieve deception, and how related vices such as lies, bullshit, misinformation, disinformation, and ignorance contribute to deception. This inter-disciplinary collection explores how we can better understand and respond to these problematic practices. The Epistemology of Deceit in a Postdigital Era: Dupery by Design will be of interest to anyone concerned with deception in a ‘postdigital’ era including fake news, and propaganda online. The election of populist governments across the world has raised concerns that fake news in online platforms is undermining the legitimacy of the press, the democratic process, and the authority of sources such as science, the social sciences and qualified experts. The global reach of Google, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms has shown that they can be used to create and spread fake and misleading news quickly and without control. These platforms operate and thrive in an increasingly balkanised media eco-system where networks of users will predominantly access and consume information that conforms to their existing worldviews. Conflicting positions, even if relevant and authoritative, are suppressed, or overlooked in everyday digital information consumption. Digital platforms have contributed to the prolific spread of false information, enabled ignorance in online news consumers, and fostered confusion over determining fact from fiction. The collection explores: Deception, what it is, and how its proliferation is achieved in online platforms. Truth and the appearance of truth, and the role digital technologies play in pretending to represent truth. How we can counter these vices to protect ourselves and our institutions from their potentially baneful effects. Applications Of Nonverbal Behavioral Theories And Research

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is intended to accomplish several goals. First, it is designed to provide a broad overview of the major areas of application of theory and research relating to nonverbal behavior. Second, individual chapters emphasize how the applications have been drawn from underlying theories and empirical bases, thereby making the link between theory, research, and applications apparent. Finally, the volume links individual chapter contributions, demonstrating how theoretical progress over the last few decades has led to important applied advances. The contributors to this book consider a wide variety of settings and topics. Their common thread, however, is a shared conviction that an understanding of nonverbal behavior can bring about an improvement in the human condition. Each of the authors has made suggestions regarding future directions for both research and practice -- and their ideas offer real promise.

The Christian S Confidence

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Can a Christian go to Hell? Can a Christian lose their salvation? Can a Christian sin? No study of soteriology (the doctrine of salvation) could be complete without thoroughly answering these important questions. As we dive into God's Word and examine the truth about eternal security, we'll discover the answer to these questions and more. "The Christian's Confidence" is written with the same depth of information as those written by John Maxwell, David Jeremiah, John MacArthur, Charles Stanley, Warren Wiersbe, and other leading Christian authors. This book will give you an in-depth look at an essential Bible doctrine. Inside, you'll find an analysis of what the Bible teaches about eternal security and a careful examination of the passages that seem to contradict that truth. I sincerely hope that you will end up with a solid understanding of the truth that is clearly taught in the Bible and that you will be equipped to defend that truth in the face of those who would attack it. Jesus said, in John 8:32, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." When you understand the truth of eternal security, you will be free - free from the bondage of religion and free from fear. When you know what the Bible says about salvation, you can be truly free in Christ.

Nonverbal Communication In Close Relationships

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Nonverbal Communication in Close Relationships provides a synthesis of research on nonverbal communication as it applies to interpersonal interaction, focusing on the close relationships of friends, family, and romantic partners. Authors Laura K. Guerrero and Kory Floyd support the premise that nonverbal communication is a product of biology, social learning, and relational context. They overview six prominent nonverbal theories and show how each is related to bio-evolutionary or sociocultural perspectives. Their work focuses on various functions of nonverbal communication, emphasizing those that are most relevant to the initiation, maintenance, and dissolution of close relationships. Throughout the book, Guerrero and Floyd highlight areas where research is either contradictory or inconclusive, hoping that in the years to come scholars will have a clearer understanding of these issues. The volume concludes with a discussion of practical implications that emerge from the scholarly literature on nonverbal communication in relationships – an essential component for understanding relationships in the real world. Nonverbal Communication in Close Relationships makes an important contribution to the development of our understanding not only of relationship processes but also of the specific workings of nonverbal communication. It will serve as a springboard for asking new questions and advancing new theories about nonverbal communication. It is intended for scholars and advanced students in personal relationship study, social psychology, interpersonal communication, nonverbal communication, family studies, and family communication. It will also be a helpful resource for researchers, clinicians, and couples searching for a better understanding of the complicated roles that nonverbal cues play in relationships.
