Heritage and Social Media explores how social media reframes our understanding and experience of heritage. Through the idea of ‘participatory culture’ the book begins to examine how social media can be brought to bear on the encounter with heritage and on the socially produced meanings and values that individuals and communities ascribe to it. To highlight the specific changes produced by social media, the book is structured around three major themes: Social Practice. New ways of understanding and experiencing heritage are emerging as a result of novel social practices of collection, representation, and communication enabled and promoted by social media. Public Formation. In the presence of widely available social technologies, peer-to-peer activities such as information and media sharing are rapidly gaining momentum, as they increasingly promote and legitimate a participatory culture in which individuals aggregate on the basis of common interests and affinities. Sense of Place. As computing becomes more pervasive and digital networks extend our surroundings, social media and technologies support new ways to engage with the people, interpretations and values that pertain to a specific territorial setting. Heritage and Social Media provides readers with a critical framework to understand how the participatory culture fostered by social media changes the way in which we experience and think of heritage. By introducing readers to how social media are theorized and used, particularly outside the institutional domain, the volume reveals through groundbreaking case studies the emerging heritage practices unique to social media. In doing so, the book unveils the new issues that are emerging from these practices and the new space for debate and critical argumentation that is required to illuminate what can be done in this burgeoning sector of heritage work.

Heritage and Sustainable Urban Transformations introduces the concept of ‘deep cities’, a novel approach to the understanding and management of sustainable historic cities that will advance knowledge about how the long-term, temporal and transformative character of urban heritage can be better integrated into urban policies for sustainable futures. Contrary to the growing emphasis on green or smart cities, which focus only on the present and future, the concept of ‘deep cities’ offers an approach that combines an in-depth understanding of the past with the present and future. Bringing together chapters that cover theoretical, methodological and management issues related to ‘deep cities’, the volume argues that using this approach will force researchers, managers and consultants to actively use the heritage and history of a city in the planning and management of sustainable cities. Exploring different definitions of ‘deep cities’, the book reveals varying and sometimes conflicting views among stakeholders concerning how, where and when the depth of a city should be conceptualized. Despite this, the book demonstrates how this new approach can help to create robust cities for the future, as new and innovative solutions are combined with the preservation and strengthening of historical features. This book presents the proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Graphic Design in Architecture, EGA 2020, focusing on heritage – including architectural and graphic heritage as well as the graphics of heritage. The third of three volumes, this book discusses topics related to mapping, cartography and landscape, as well as innovative education methods, particularly in the context of teaching architectural heritage. It covers historical cartography and new cartographies, as well as methods for representing the landscape, and reports on different learning methods and practices, including classroom methods but also those involving more active participation and multidisciplinary and collaborative production. Given its scope, this book will appeal cartographers, designers and teachers, providing them with extensive information on innovative methodologies and a source of inspiration for their future work.

How should designers respond to urban uncertainty? How can we ensure our urban heritage is protected against urban risks and climate change? How can we create places that increase urban quality, socialisation, equity and opportunities for change minimising environmental damages? This volume addresses current trends and challenges, that explore on how we transform our urban heritage in ways which increase urban resilience embracing innovation and technology. Part one provides a critical view in driving forward a new conception of urban transformation that should respond to current concerns around economic, social and urban change. Part two underscores the importance of the current perception of urban and architectural design that can take into consideration climate change.

This book constitutes the papers of the International Workshop on Analysis in Digital Cultural Heritage 2017, held in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, in June 2017. The 16 full and 19 poster papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 93 submissions. The main objective of the Workshop was to present recent developments and applications of IT technologies for Cultural Heritage preservation, namely: Demonstration of the advantages of new generation of equipment for mapping, digital survey and documentation of heritage assets and sites; Presentation of technologies for digitalization, optimal documentation and information sharing on Cultural Heritage; Tools and procedures for social interaction enhancing, fostering awareness and participation; Rising of the knowledge level in domain of IT applications for Cultural Heritage preservation; Usage of virtual reality for better understanding and learning on Cultural Heritage.

As part of the Institutional Capacity Building Plan, which is the first of the three components of the Regional Programme for Cultural and Natural Heritage in South-East Europe launched in 2003, a "transnational theme-based debate" was organised. The second step in this debate stemmed from an assessment of requests from the countries/regions participating in the Regional Programme: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo/ UNMIK, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia".The first step was concerned with current heritage policies and legislation. Its aim was to take stock of the position regarding legislative reforms and heritage policies in the countries of South-East Europe. It also highlighted the need for an in-depth analysis of certain key areas where difficulties still arose in implementation.The second step was concerned with tools for integrated management of the cultural and natural heritage, in the broad sense of the term "heritage" (the concept of cultural environment). It linked together three key topics previously identified: documentation systems, incorporating the heritage dimension in environment, regional development and town planning documents, permits, controls and penalties related to heritage conservation work.

The two-volume set LNCS 12794-12795 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Culture and Computing, C&C 2021, which was held as part of HCI International 2021 and took place virtually during July 24-29, 2021. The total of 1276 papers and 241 posters included in the 39 HCII 2021 proceedings volumes was carefully reviewed and selected from 5222 submissions. The papers included in the HCII-C&C volume set were organized in topical sections as follows: Part I: ICT for cultural heritage; technology and art; visitors’ experiences in digital culture; Part II: Design thinking in cultural contexts; digital humanities, new media and culture; perspectives on cultural computing.

The Heritage Theatre is a book about cultural heritage and globalisation. Cultural heritage is the stage on which the global community, smaller communities and individuals play out their similarities and differences, their identities and singularities. Cultural heritage forms an implicit cultural code governing the relationship between parts and the whole, individuals and communities, communities and outsiders, as well as the relationship between communities and the world as a whole. Cultural heritage, by way of its producers, its products and its audience, presents an image of the world and its inner coherence. The subjects in this book range from places as distant from each other as Dar-es-Salaam, Jakarta, Amsterdam, Le Creusot, Trinidad, Brazzaville, Bremerhaven, New York and Prague, and deal with themes such as wayang, Kylie Minogue, airports and heritage, modernist architecture in Africa and the impact of DNA research on the concept of roots. The volume is based on papers presented at a conference organised by the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The authors have backgrounds in cultural studies, art history, anthropology, museum studies, sociology, tourist studies and history.
