A Stir Of Echoes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Much has been stated about poetry. "Poetry is what in a poem makes you laugh, cry, prickle, be silent, makes your toe nails twinkle, makes you want to do this or that or nothing, makes you know that you are alone in the unknown world, that your bliss and suffering is forever shared and forever all your own." Dylan Thomas "Poetry can be dangerous, especially beautiful poetry, because it gives the illusion of having had the experience without actually going through it." Rumi "Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance." Carl Sandburg "Poetry is a word-fed spring flowing from the consciousness of the poet's mind." Régis Auffray With "A Stir of Echoes" it is the author's hope that the reader will be able to appreciate and perhaps to identify with the various situations, dilemmas, conflicts, miseries, euphoria, etc. that are expressed and consequently shared through his verses. The verses offer a glimpse into the author's soul and thus a way to get to know him more intimately.

The Red Kimono

BOOK EXCERPT:

In 1941, racial tensions are rising in the California community where nineyear-old Sachiko Kimura and her seventeen-year-old brother, Nobu, live. Japan has attacked Pearl Harbor, people are angry, and one night, Sachiko and Nobu witness three teenage boys taunting and beating their father in the park. Sachiko especially remembers Terrence Harris, the boy with dark skin and hazel eyes, and Nobu cannot believe the boys capable of such violence toward his father are actually his friends. What Sachiko and Nobu do not know is that Terrence's family had received a telegram that morning with news that Terrence's father was killed at Pearl Harbor. Desperate to escape his pain, Terrence rushes from his home and runs into two high-school friends who convince him to find a Japanese man and get revenge. They do not know the man they attacked is Sachiko and Nobu's father. In the months that follow, Terrence is convicted of his crime and Sachiko and Nobu are sent to an internment camp in Arkansas, a fictionalized version of the two camps that actually existed in Arkansas during the war. While behind bars and barbed wire, each of the three young people will go through dramatic changes. One will learn acceptance. One will remain imprisoned by resentment, and one will seek a path to forgiveness.

Preaching Must Die

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The real question for homiletics in our increasingly postmodern, post-Christian contexts is not how we are going to prevent preaching from dying, but how we are going to help it die a good death. Preaching was not made to live. At most, preaching is a witness, a sign, a crimson X marking a demolition site. The church has developed sophisticated technologies in modernity to give preaching the semblance of life, belying the truth: preaching was born under a death sentence. It was born to die. Only when preaching embraces its own death is it able to live. This book, then, is a bold homiletical manifesto against preaching in support of preaching, and beyond preaching to the entire worship experience. It troubles modern homiletical theologies in light of the trouble always already at work within preaching. Hereby, it supports a way of preaching--and teaching preaching--that moves counter to the "wisdom of this world." It aims to joins in God‘s self-revealed counterlogic of superabundance that saturates and thereby breaks open worldly systems of thought and practice. The purpose of this book is to expose preaching to its own death-to help it embrace its death-so that it can discover what eternal and abundant life might look and feels like.

Arduino For Kids

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A cool guide to help kids develop robots and electronics About This Book Get clearly-written code with descriptions and comments that explain each code section The book comes with separate code files, one entire program at a time, as well as many diagrams and separate downloadable files that contain colored photos explaining steps in the book Kids can build multiple projects during the course of the book; by the end, they will have working projects of their own Who This Book Is For This book is for children aged 9 and up, and their parents, who may or may not have a technical background. This book is tailored around the central idea of introducing electronics as a fun and a curiosity-inducing exercise. This book can act as a bonding exercise between parent and child over a single weekend. What You Will Learn Write simple programs using variables, functions, loops, arrays, and libraries Set up the Arduino and understand its internal functioning Get to grips with connections in electronics and arrive at ways to connect various components yourself Delve into various sensors and their selection and build your own sensor Unravel the concept of resistors and capacitors along with understanding the physics of electronics Become an inventor through interactive exercises (such as making a friend happy with a proximity sensor, and giving "life" to a plant) In Detail The mission of this book is to integrate technology with the tools that children already use for crafts so that they feel that the technology is an extension of their playtime. We use coding, sensors, and micro-controllers integrated with art and craft supplies, origami, and Playdough. There are 10 fun-filled chapters that talk to children directly, and give clear instructions for non-technical parents too. We use Arduino as the controller of choice due to its easy availability and large community. By the end of the book, children will comfortably be able to set up their Arduino, read and understand code, manipulate code, and ultimately write their own code for projects. They will also be able to use basic sensors and know how components connect to each other. All the learning takes place with lots of colorful pictures and the circuits are neatly presented using wiring. Style and approach This book will show you the glamour of common and easily available sensors, so that kids and parents waste no time searching for parts. We provide simple yet fun projects with step-by-step instructions that make it easy to get hands-on.
