Ecumenical & Interreligious Perspectives: Globalization in Theological Education is a collection of articles on the wide-ranging effects of ecumenism on theological education. Fifteen eminent historians, theologians, missiologists, Christian educators, and ecumenists in the United Methodist Church and other denominations have addressed such topics as the critical redefinition of ecumenism, global inclusiveness, and the cultural assumptions implicit in interreligious dialogue. These important essays show that the seminaries are responding to the new global awareness with vigor and sensitivity. Together, they give us a picture of theological education that is spiritually and intellectually prepared to face the challenges of the twenty-first century.

The Church is the Sacrament of Communion with God and unity among all men (Cf. Vatican II doc. L.G. 1). Christ prayed for this unity amongst his adherents in accordance with the unity between him and God the Father (Cf. Jn. 17: 21). This unity will be a sign by which the outside world is to believe in him, hence calling on the Church to rise up to this demand. Efforts were made by the Church to respond to this demand, but it was at the Second Vatican Council that the search for unity became an imperative. With this Council, the Church acknowledged the possibility of Salvation for the members of other Christian traditions and people of other religions. The Church has done a lot to promote this unity, through the teachings of the Magisterium and the activities of the recent Popes. It is then important to study the situation of Nigeria, where this call of the Vatican II, has received scant response both in ecumenical and interreligious relations. Having done pastoral work in places with interdenominational and interreligious rivalry in Nigeria, I became concerned and worried. The present religious crises in Nigeria, has escalated to an issue of grave concern with the Boko Haram insurgency. My motivation is to demonstrate the teaching of the Church regarding interdenominational and interreligious dialogue within Nigeria. There has been no sustained effort to build bridges of religious unity in the country. This research will demonstrate the necessity of ecumenical dialogue as a prelude to interreligious dialogue in Nigeria. On the global level, the need for various religions to foster relationships has become an imperative. Two important bodies CAN and NIREC, will be studied in this book. The work aims at demonstrating the involvement of the Nigerian Christians and Muslims in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. Essentially concerned with the Catholic view of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue & its application to the Nigerian situation. No in-depth study of the religions involved. It is rather the fact of their existence & the role dialogue will play with them to solve religious problems in Nigeria. Though ATR was considered in this work, but the issue of dialogue will only involve Nigerian Muslims & Christians. The research wishes to provoke further study on dialogue between ATR and any of the other two religions. Two issues involved: the reality & importance of the Catholic teachings on ecumenical & interreligious dialogue, and their application to the Nigerian situation. Key methods involved in this work are literary research and analysis, through theological, historical, critical, descriptive, analytical & expository approaches.

Im April 2019 wird Jan Hallebeek emeritiert. Damit endet seine aktive Laufbahn als von der Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (1989–1999) finanzierter Forscher, als Extraordinarius an der Theologischen Fakultät der Universität Utrecht (1997–2006) und zuletzt als Professor für Rechtsgeschichte an der Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (seit 1999). Die Stationen seiner Tätigkeit spiegeln zwei seiner Schwerpunkte wieder: die Kirchen(rechts)geschichte einerseits und das klassische römische Recht und die Geschichte des römischen Rechts in Europa andererseits. In glücklicher Weise konnte Jan Hallebeek sein Engagement für die Altkatholische Kirche mit seiner Arbeit als Forscher verbinden. Die Beiträger greifen das breite rechtshistorische und kirchenrechtliche Spektrum auf, das der Jubilar in seiner eigenen Arbeit aufgespannt hat. Jan Hallebeek will become emeritus in April 2019. That will mark an end to his professional career as Researcher and Lecturer on a Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences post (1989–1999), as Professor Extraordinarius at the Theological Faculty of the University of Utrecht (1997–2006), and as Professor on the Chair of Legal History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (from 1999 onwards). These positions reflect two focal points of his research: on the one hand Church history and Canon Law, on the other hand classical and particularly medieval Roman law and their history. They matched very felicitously his engagement for and in the Old-Catholic Church. The contributions centre on the themes and questions the honorand has pursued in his work till now.

Ecumenism: A Guide for the Perplexed is a comprehensive introduction to the methods, achievements, and future prospects of the modern ecumenical movement. The authors begin the volume by charting out a serviceable definition of ecumenism, a term that has long been a source of confusion for students of theology and church history. They review the chronology of the modern ecumenical movement and highlight the major events, figures, accomplishments, and impasses. This historical survey is followed by critical examinations of three significant challenges for contemporary ecumenical theology and practice. Along the way, the authors provide commentary upon the difficulties and prospects that the ecumenical movement might anticipate as it enters this new millennium.

The contents of this book originated in a conference at the Catholic University of America in May 2015. The essays and lectures contained within focus on the relationships of the Catholic Church with the other "Abrahamic" faiths, primarily Islam and Judaism. There is some discussion of the Asian religions as well. This volume, in structure, loosely follows the document Nostra Aetate itself. The first part of the book gives a broad view of the document and its importance. The following parts concentrates on the relationships between the Catholic Church and the Asian, Muslim and Jewish religions. The concluding section of the book surveys the reception Nostra Aetate received in various ecclesial and academic contexts.

The Second Vatican Council committed the Catholic Church to the service of the world when it defined the church to be missionary by nature and a sacrament pointing to and making Christ present to all. Such a vision of the church informed the restoration of the permanent diaconate within the ministerial life of the church--a vocation and participation in Holy Orders endowed precisely with the charism of service. Deacons are called and ordained to serve in the areas of sacrament, word, and charity. This work considers the place and role of deacons in the life of the contemporary church through the lens of the ecclesiological reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
