BOOK EXCERPT:

This text deals with signal processing as an important aspect of electronic communications in its role of transmitting information, and the language of its expression. It develops the required mathematics in an interesting and informative way, leading to confidence on the part of the reader. The first part of the book focuses on continuous-time models, and contains chapters on signals and linear systems, and on system responses. Fourier methods, so vital in the study of information theory, are developed prior to a discussion of methods for the design of analogue filters. The second part of the book is directed towards discrete-time signals and systems. There is full development of the z- and discrete Fourier transforms to support the chapter on digital filter design. All preceding material in the book is drawn together in the final chapter on some important aspects of speech processing which provides an up-to-date example of the use of the theory. Topics considered include a speech production model, linear predictive filters, lattice filters and cepstral analysis, with application to recognition of non-nasal voiced speech and formant estimation. In addition to course requirement for undergraduates studying electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and branches of computer science involving such signal processing as speak synthesis, computer vision and robotics, this book should provide a valuable reference source for post-graduate research work in industry and academia. An elementary knowledge of algebra (e.g. partial fractions) is a prerequisite, and also calculus including differential equations. A knowledge of complex numbers and of the basic concept of a function of a complex variable is also needed. - Deals with signal processing as an important aspect of electronic communications in its role of transmitting information, and the language of its expression - Topics considered include a speech production model, linear predictive filters, lattice filters and cepstral analysis, with application to recognition of non-nasal voiced speech and formant estimation

Electronic Signals And Systems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The subject of Signals and Systems is enormously complex, involving many concepts such as signals, mathematics and filter design that are woven together in an intricate manner. To cope with this scope and complexity, many Signals and Systems texts are often organized around the “numerical examples” of a system. With such organization, students can see through the complexity of Signals and Systems, they can learn about the distinct concepts and protocols in one part of the communication system while seeing the big picture of how all parts fit together. From a pedagogical perspective, our personal experience has been that such approach indeed works well. Based on the Authors extensive experience of teaching and research, the book is written with such a reader in mind. The Book is intended for a course on signals & systems at the senior undergraduate level and above. The authors consider all the requirements and tools used in analysis and design of discrete time systems for filter design and signal processing. Key features of the International Edition:• The extensive use of MATLAB based examples to illustrate how to solve the signals & systems problems. The textbook includes a wealth of problems with solutions.• Worked-out examples have been included to explain new and difficult concepts and to expose the reader to real-life signal processing problems. The inclusion of FIR and IIR filter design further enriches the contents of the book.

Smart Grids Renewable Energy Power Electronics Signal Processing And Communication Systems Applications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book discusses power electronics, signal processing and communication systems applications in smart grids (SG). Smart grids can be considered an evolution of the classic energy model to allow a more efficient management of the relationship between supply and demand, in order to overcome the contingency problems of the modern world. To achieve their goals, they use advanced technologies of information and communication, power electronics and signal processing, and can be used to integrate renewable energy sources. The book is divided into two main parts. The first part presents the application of power electronics technologies in renewable energy systems, while the second part presents some telecommunications, signal processing and energy capture technologies within the context of SGs. The chapters are written by invited expert authors, according to their research areas.

Photonic Signal Processing Second Edition

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This Second Edition of "Photonic Signal Processing" updates most recent R&D on processing techniques of signals in photonic domain from the fundamentals given in its first edition. Several modern techniques in Photonic Signal Processing (PSP) are described: Graphical signal flow technique to simplify the analysis of the photonic transfer functions, plus its insights into the physical phenomena of such processors. The resonance and interference of optical fields are presented by the poles and zeros of the optical circuits, respectively. Detailed design procedures for fixed and tunable optical filters. These filters, "brick-wall-like", now play a highly important role in ultra-broadband (100GBaud) to spectral shaping of sinc temporal response so as to generate truly Nyquist sampler of the received eye diagrams 3-D PSP allows multi-dimensional processing for highly complex optical signals Photonic differentiators and integrators for dark soliton generations. Optical dispersion compensating processors for ultra-long haul optical transmission systems. Some optical devices essentials for PSP. Many detailed PSP techniques are given in the chapters of this Second Edition.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The potential of photonic signal processing (PSP) to overcome electronic limits for processing ultra-wideband signals, provide signal conditioning that can be integrated in line with fiber optic systems, and improve signal quality makes this technology extremely attractive for improvement in receiver sensitivity performance. Spanning the current transitional period, Photonic Signal Processing: Techniques and Applications addresses the merging techniques of processing and manipulating signals propagating in the optical domain. The book begins with a historical perspective of PSP and introduces photonic components essential for photonic processing systems, such as optical amplification devices, optical fibers, and optical modulators. The author demonstrates the representation of photonic circuits via a signal flow graph technique adapted for photonic domain. He describes photonic signal processors, such as differentiators and integrators, and their applications for the generation of solitons, and then covers the application of these solitons in optically amplified fiber transmission systems. The book illustrates the compensation dispersion using a photonic processor, the design of optical filters using photonic processor techniques, and the filtering of microwave signals in the optical domain. Exploring methods for the processing of signals in the optical domain, the book includes solutions to photonic circuits that use signal flow techniques and significant applications in short pulse generation, the filtering of signals, differentiation, and the integration of signals. It delineates fundamental techniques on the processing of signals in the optical domain as well as their applications that lead to advanced aspects of performing generation of short pulses, integration, differentiation, and filtering for optical communications systems and networks and processing of ultra-high speed signals.
