BOOK EXCERPT:

This book entitled "Environmental Impact Assessment and Management," embodies 15 chapters covering a wide spectrum. Chapter 1 contains details of EIA, Basic elements and Methodologies. Further, important guidelines to be followed before establishing industries, water related projects and transport related projects are narrated in Chapter 2. Important case studies of EIA viz, second stage expansion of Malpe fishing harbour, Human impact on Himalayan Ecosystem, Konkan Railway Project, Heavy metal pollution in the Coovum river, an impact prediction for an irrigation project and impact of cement making on the air quality of Coimbatore, are dealt in Chapter 3. Once a project comes into existence, it results in side effects of the immediate environment which are evident on the consecutive 5-10 years of operation. Therefore, its efficiency and pollution abatement systems should be checked and corrected in a manner similar to financial auditing and this aspect has been incorporated in Chapter 4. Now-a-days due to the rapid process of urbanization, all the cities of India have accumulated a lot of filth leading to ghasty smell, loss of property value and the spread of diseases. In order to have a clean environment, we have to have a systematic refuse management package for Indian conditions. As illustrations of this view, the urban solid waste management in Hyderabad, Shimoga and Rourkee cities have been explained in the Chapter 5 and 6 respectively. The consecutive chapters deal on various other aspects such as coastal zone management, deforestation, impact of mining on fisheries, wild life management, termite pest control, bioremediation of wastes by hydrophytes, role of remote sensing in EIA, Kaiga environment and management of food protection.

As the world continues to shift toward concerns over climate change and environmental protection issues, developmental projects must have environmental impact assessments (EIA) conducted as well as environmental management plans (EMP). This book describes how all phases of a project, from planning, to operation, to post operation, must consider potential environmental impacts and their mitigation. Features: Presents numerous sustainable development considerations for key industries Discusses how environmental impact assessments are prepared for each stage of a project Describes different environmental management plans for established projects Offers mitigation plans for various potential environmental impacts Includes practical examples from the construction, manufacturing, transport, and mining industries Useful for practicing professional engineers as well as upper-level students, this book covers all aspects of environmental impact assessments from start to finish.

The Professional Practice Of Environmental Management

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This series is dedicated to serving the growing community of scholars and practitioners concerned with the principles and applications of environ mental management. Each volume is a thorough treatment of a specific topic of importance for proper management practices. A fundamental ob jective of these books is to help the reader discern and implement man's stewardship of our environment and the world's renewable resources. For we must strive to understand the relationship between man and nature, act to bring harmony to it, and nurture an environment that is both stable and productive. These objectives have often eluded us because the pursuit of other in dividual and societal goals has diverted us from a course of living in balance with the environment. At times, therefore, the environmental manager may have to exert restrictive control, which is usually best applied to man, not nature. Attempts to alter or harness nature have often failed or backfired, as exemplified by the results of imprudent use of herbicides, fertilizers, water, and other agents. Each book in this series will shed light on the fundamental and applied aspects of environmental management. It is hoped that each will help solve a practical and serious environmental problem.

Environmental Management

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

There has been a steady increase in anthropogenic pressure over the past few years due to rapid industrialization, urbanization and population growth, causing frequent environmental hazards. Threats of global environmental change, such as climate change and sea level rise, will exacerbate such problems. Therefore, appropriate policies and measures are needed for management to address both local and global trends. The book 'Environmental Management' provides a comprehensive and authoritative account of sustainable environmental management of diverse ecotypes, from tropical to temperate. A variety of regional environmental issues with the respective remedial measures has been precisely illustrated. The book provides an excellent text which offers a versatile and in-depth account of management of wide perspectives, e.g. waste management, lake, coastal and water management, high mountain ecosystem as well as viticulture management. We hope that this publication will be a reference document to serve the needs of researchers of various disciplines, policy makers, planners and administrators as well as stakeholders to formulate strategies for sustainable management of emerging environmental issues.

Policy Intervention Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is crucial for protecting the environment, especially in a country like India--with its dense and rapidly growing population, shrinking land mass, and an economy poised for rapid growth. In order to make EIA an interactive process, it is necessary that it is supported by a strong follow-up mechanism. A properly formulated follow-up process would not only encourage compliance but also increase awareness among the stakeholders. Policy Intervention Analysis: environmental impact assessment evaluates the adequacy of post project monitoring (PPM) process in India and its effective implementation with a focus on the industrial sector. The book investigates the reasons for poor compliance and gives corrective measures for corrective PPM. It identifies specific measures to improve environmental conditions and provides an action plan that will help strengthen the monitoring and enforcement mechanism based on specific regional concerns.

Environmental Management In Construction

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Demands on the construction industry are changing, and it is now virtually essential for environmental management to be considered at all stages of a project. Many construction managers are finding a quantitative approach useful, and this book outlines four quantitative methods which can be applied at different construction stages, and which fit within a comprehensive framework of dynamic Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). These include: a method to quantitatively evaluate and reduce pollution and hazards levels a method to evaluate the environmental-consciousness of proposed construction plans a method to reduce on-site construction wastes through an incentive reward programme a method to promote C and D waste exchange in the local construction industry. With an experimental case study of the application of these methods, this book delivers a comprehensive review of environmental management issues in construction. With regulatory requirements potentially favouring the quantitative approach, this timely guide ensures that contractors will be able to keep pace with environmental management standards.

Environmental Management Issues And Concerns In Developing Countries

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book deals with issues and concerns for the human environment in the developing countries incorporating natural processes and systems, pollution removal technology, energy conservation, environmental impact assessment process, economics, culture, political structure and societal equity from a management point of view. Solutions to the emerging problems of the environment need a paradigmatic shift in approach from a process based model to a socio-political-economic model. Hence environmental management should involve equality and control over use of the finite natural resources and the balance between Earth’s biocapacity and humanity’s ecological footprint. Changes such as green technologies, human population stabilization and adoption of ecologically harmonious lifestyles are absolutely essential and will require redesigning of political institutions, policies and revisiting forgotten skills of sustainable practices of environmental management. These challenges should centre on environment governance using the concepts of common property, equity and security. This book is relevant for academics, professionals, administrators and policy makers who are concerned with various aspects of environment management and governance.
