This book engages thinkers from different religious and humanist traditions in response to Pope Francis’s pronouncements on interreligious dialogue. The contributors write from the perspectives of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Humanism. Each author elaborates on how the pope’s openness to dialogue and invitation to practical collaboration on global concerns represents a significant achievement as the world faces an uncertain future. The theological tension within the Catholic double commitment to evangelization on the one hand, and dialogue on the other, remains unresolved for most writers, but this does not prevent them from praising the strong invitation to dialogue–especially with the focus on justice, peace, and ecological sustainability.

The Second Vatican Council endorsed an engagement with the modern and secularized world through a renewed proclamation of the Gospel. John Paul II described this as the New Evangelization, and in 2010, Benedict XVI confirmed this priority by creating the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization to 're-propose the perennial truth of the Gospel.' The New Evangelization was the subject of the Synod of Bishops in 2012 and in 2014 Pope Francis gave his reflections on the topic in Evangelii Gaudium. The New Evangelization draws on material presented and discussed at the conference 'Vatican II, 50 Years On: The New Evangelization' organised by Leeds Trinity University on 26-29th June 2012. Part I traces the historical and theological links between the Council and the New Evangelization. Part II examines the renewed understanding of the Church as a result of the Council and the extent to which it is shaped by civilization. Part III analyzes the nature of the New Evangelization and its outworking in today's multifarious context of cultures, religions and societies. Part IV deals with the implementation of the New Evangelization by different communities and organizations and the issues this raises. In the Introduction and Conclusion, the editors reflect on the New Evangelization in the light of significant developments since 2012.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: In pursuing the study, we followed a theological analysis of the concept of Evangelization in a marginalised world, and in this regard we base ourselves an the scriptural sources, documents of Vatican II, post-Vatican, the papal and synodal documents, and the reflections of theologians an the issue. Our study is divided into five chapters an the whole. The first chapter, which has three parts. The first part of it is an attempt to see the meaning, context and core of the commonly used expression `holistic liberation' . Here we try to see whether the real meaning of the term has been incorporated into the life and pattern of the missionary endeavour of the Church as outlined in scripture, papal, synodal, and Vatican II documents. For this purpose, in the second part, we examine whether the notions of human dignity and human person as given in Pastoral Constitution of Gaudium et Spes, are visible vantage points and the stepping stones for further post-Vatican teachings. In the concluding section, efforts are made to throw some light an the holistic liberation in the ecclesial context of India, after which we review the three dimensions of evangelization in India, i.e. inculturation, dialogue and liberation. Chapter two of our work is situated against the Indian background. A reasonable knowledge of the context in which the evangelization has to take place seems necessary. In order to situate the context properly we try to see India from its social, economic, cultural and religious dimensions. The ecclesial situation of India is considered because we believe that it is the Churches in India that are the agents of the process of holistic liberation. In the second part of this chapter we make a semantic view of `marginalised' . It is followed by an investigation an the most marginalised in Madhya Pradesh/India viz. the Dalits, the Adivasis and the Women, who are the victims of poverty, illiteracy and oppression. Marginalised in our study imply all those sections of the society in Madhya Pradesh who are kept an the fringes of the society an either one or all of the following criteria (a) Politically, (b) Economically, (c) Culturally. For a better understanding of the marginalised groups we take a specimen, the `Satnamis' in Raipur diocese and focus our attention an them, in the third part of this chapter, as they are the most depressed and oppressed people here. Christian theology of religions remains a central component of the Christian response to global religious diversity. In the face of theological refusals to engage with issues of religious absolutism and new impressions from interreligious encounters, this book seeks to inject fresh energy into a debate that has stalled in recent years. The encounter between Christians and people of different religious persuasions raises questions of how to interpret Christian absolutism for a new and developing consciousness that values the experience of the religious other. This book argues that interreligious dialogue, interreligious ethical collaboration, and comparative studies all point to a pluralist future, where we are obliged to recognize the spiritual authenticity of the experience animating many religions. Building friendly relations between faith communities is to be applauded but it is insufficient in the face of the many challenges confronting the global human community. Whether we are speaking of cooperation in civil society, peace in the world, or the overarching ecological crisis encompassing the planet as a whole, the acceptance of the diversity of religions as a positive religious value will strengthen the sense of global responsibility that is needed.

In the twenty-first century, Jews and Christians are challenged to reconsider their theological assumptions by two inescapable truths: the moral tragedy of the holocaust demands that Christian thinkers acknowledge the violent effects of theologically delegitimizing Jews and Judaism, and the pervasive reality of cultural and religious pluralism calls both Christian and Jewish theologians to rethink the covenant in the presence of the Other.
