BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume contains the proceedings of FMOODS 2003, the 6th IFIP WG 6. 1 International Conference on Formal Methods for Open Object-Based Distributed Systems. The conference was held in Paris, France on November 19–21, 2003. The event was the sixth meeting of this conference series, which is held roughly every year and a half, the earlier events having been held in Paris, Canterbury, Florence, Stanford, and Twente. ThegoaloftheFMOODSseriesofconferencesistobringtogetherresearchers whose work encompasses three important and related ?elds: – formal methods; – distributed systems; – object-based technology. Such a convergence is representative of recent advances in the ?eld of distributed systems,andprovideslinksbetweenseveralscienti?candtechnologicalcommu- ties, as represented by the conferences FORTE/PSTV, CONCUR, and ECOOP. The objective of FMOODS is to provide an integrated forum for the p- sentation of research in the above-mentioned ?elds, and the exchange of ideas and experiences in the topics concerned with the formal methods support for open object-based distributed systems. For the call for papers, aspects of int- est of the considered systems included, but were not limited to: formal models; formal techniques for speci?cation, design or analysis; component-based design; veri?cation, testing and validation; semantics of programming, coordination, or modeling languages; type systems for programming, coordination or modelling languages; behavioral typing; multiple viewpoint modelling and consistency - tween di?erent models; transformations of models; integration of quality of s- vice requirements into formal models; formal models for security; and appli- tions and experience, carefully described.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The IFIP TC-10 Working Conference on Distributed and Parallel Embedded Systems (DIPES 2004) brings together experts from industry and academia to discuss recent developments in this important and growing field in the splendid city of Toulouse, France. The ever decreasing price/performance ratio of microcontrollers makes it economically attractive to replace more and more conventional mechanical or electronic control systems within many products by embedded real-time computer systems. An embedded real-time computer system is always part of a well-specified larger system, which we call an intelligent product. Although most intelligent products start out as stand-alone units, many of them are required to interact with other systems at a later stage. At present, many industries are in the middle of this transition from stand-alone products to networked embedded systems. This transition requires reflection and architecting: The complexity of the evolving distributed artifact can only be controlled, if careful planning and principled design methods replace the - hoc engineering of the first version of many standalone embedded products.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Nowadays, distributed systems are increasingly present, for public software applications as well as critical systems. software applications as well as critical systems. This title and Distributed Systems: Design and Algorithms – from the same editors – introduce the underlying concepts, the associated design techniques and the related security issues. The objective of this book is to describe the state of the art of the formal methods for the analysis of distributed systems. Numerous issues remain open and are the topics of major research projects. One current research trend consists of profoundly mixing the design, modeling, verification and implementation stages. This prototyping-based approach is centered around the concept of model refinement. This book is more specifically intended for readers that wish to gain an overview of the application of formal methods in the design of distributed systems. Master’s and PhD students, as well as engineers in industry, will find a global understanding of the techniques as well as references to the most up-to-date works in this area.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is based on material from current research projects and cooperations and from a recent workshop in the area of Knowledge Base Management Systems. It contains 25 revised papers and related discussions that concentrate on the integration of Database Technology (deductive databases, extended relational technology, object-oriented systems) and Artificial Intelligence (in particular logic programming and knowledge representation). The emphasis of the book is on the integration of DB/AI technology required for knowledge Base Management Systems. The book isolates major conceptual contributions, systems extensions, and reseach directions that lead towards that goal. This book is a European counterpart to another volume in the Topics in Information Systems Series, 'On Knowledge Base Management Systems', resulting from a North American workshop and edited by M. Brodie and J. Mylopoulos, which concentrates on theoretical results and the more abstract levels of Knowledge Base Management.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Formal methods traditionally address the question of transforming software engineering into a mature engineering discipline. This essentially refers to trusting that the software-intensive systems that form our society's infrastructures are behaving according to their specifications. More recently, formal methods are also used to understand propert

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is written for computer programmers, analysts and scientists, as well as computer science students, as an intro duction to the principles of distributed system design. The emphasis is placed on a clear understanding of the concepts, rather than on details; and the reader will learn about the struc ture of distributed systems, their problems, and approaches to their design and development. The reader should have a basic knowledge of computer systems and be familiar with modular design principles for software development. He should also be aware of present-day remote-access and distributed computer applications. The book consists of three parts which deal with prin ciples of distributed systems, communications architecture and protocols, and formal description techniques. The first part serves as an introduction to the broad meaning of "distributed system". We give examples, try to define terms, and discuss the problems that arise in the context of parallel and distributed processing. The second part presents the typical layered protocol architecture of distributed systems, and discusses problems of compatibility and interworking between heterogeneous computer systems. The principles of the lower layer functions and protocols are explained in some detail, including link layer protocols and network transmission services. The third part deals with specification issues. The role of specifications in the design of distributed systems is explained in general, and formal methods for the specification, analysis and implementation of distributed systems are discussed.
