Contemporary politics is dominated by discussions of rights and liberties as the proper subjects about which citizens should be concerned in the political sphere. In Public Space and Political Experience: An Arendtian Interpretation, David Antonini argues that Hannah Arendt conceived of politics differently and that her thought can help us retrieve a more authentic sense of politics as the site where citizens can speak and act together about matters of shared concern. Antonini shows that citizens can experience politics together if they approach it not as a realm where privately interested individuals compete for their rights or liberties but instead as a space where plural human beings come together as distinct yet equal creatures. Antonini argues that if we read Arendt as primarily concerned with political experience, we can reimagine common political concepts such as freedom, power, revolution, and civil disobedience. The book posits that politics should be considered a fundamental form of human experience, one rooted in what Arendt refers to as the existential condition of politics—human plurality. If plurality is the existential condition out of which our political life emerges, we can enliven and reimagine the possibilities that political life can provide for contemporary citizens.

Critiques the legacy and ongoing influence of Deleuze on the discipline and practice of architecture. This collection looks critically at how Deleuze challenges architecture as a discipline, how architecture contributes to philosophy and how we can come to understand the complex politics of space of our increasingly networked world. Since the 1980s, Deleuze's philosophy has fuelled a generation of architectural thinking, and can be seen in the design of a global range of contemporary built environments. His work has also alerted architecture to crucial ecological, political and social problems that the discipline needs to reconcile.

For all but the most credit-worthy companies, it is more efficient to finance large pools of assets that have predictable behavioral characteristics through non-standard arrangements. These off-balance sheet structures allow credit exposures to be tailored to investor risk, asset class, and an ever-increasing diversity of idiosyncratic needs on the part of issuers and investors. Um die politische Einheit der Bundesstaaten zu erreichen, mußten bereits bei der Ausarbeitung der Verfassung weitreichende Kompromisse eingegangen werden. Sie führten letztlich zum Abspalten der Südstaaten und zu einem Bürgerkrieg. Dessen ursprüngliches Motiv war der Erhalt der Union. Als Resultat formulieren wir heute die Abschaffung der Sklaverei und die Neuordnung der Vereinigten Staaten auf der Basis von neuen Prinzipien, die nicht mehr vordergründig die Freiheit des Einzelnen gegenüber der Regierung betonten, sondern die Gleichheit vor dem Gesetz. An dieser Stelle setzt das Thema meiner Arbeit an. Ziel ist eine Beschreibung der Notwendigkeit eines Paradigmawechsels von Freiheit zu Gleichheit. Vor dem Hintergrund der unterschiedlichen sozialen Situation von Afroamerikanern und Weißen in den Vereinigten Staaten, die, wie gezeigt wird, eine Folge von Sklaverei und Rassentrennung sind, wird das Konzept von Freiheit mit dem Konzept von Gleichheit in Beziehung gesetzt. Das schließt einen Exkurs in die Ideengeschichte dieser Konzepte und der amerikanischen Verfassung ein. Darüber hinaus erfolgt eine Beschreibung der unterschiedlichen Lebenswelten von Weißen und Afroamerikanern damals und heute und eine Analyse der Faktoren, die zu dieser Situation führten. Einen großen Raum der Arbeit nimmt die Herausbildung und Wahrnehmung der Konflikte ein, die sich auf Grund der propagierten Ziele der Revolution und der begrenzten Möglichkeiten zu ihrer Durchsetzung ergaben. Sklaverei wird in diesem Zusammenhang als die Institution beschrieben, die maßgeblich zur Herausbildung und Wahrnehmung der Konflikte führte. Der aktuelle Bezug entsteht durch eine Analyse der Reparationsdebatte, wobei speziell eine Klage gegen private Firmen einer genauen Betrachtung unterzogen wird. Als wesentlichstes Ergebnis der Arbeit läßt sich formulieren, daß die Gründungsväter beim Ausarbeiten der Verfassung die notwendige Einheit der Bundesstaaten der Betonung von Gleichheit für alle Amerikaner vorzogen, sogar vorziehen mußten. Sie beschworen damit notwendigerweise einen Konflikt herauf, der Jahrzehnte später zum Bürgerkrieg führte, in dessen Ergebnis die Neuorientierung der Verfassung stand, was im Grunde jedoch eine Rückorientierung auf die Werte der Revolution darstellte.

Design for Life: The Architecture of Sim Van der Ryn surveys the work and principles of Sim Van der Ryn, one of the world's most important leaders in the field of sustainalbe architecture. Sharing his years of experience as a teacher and using his building designs as examples, the author shows us that buildings are not objects but organisms, and cities are not machines but complex ecosystems. Fleeing Holland just weeks before Hitler's invasion, the Van der Ryn family settled in the outskirts of New York City. Sim Van der Ryn is the president of Van der Ryn Architects, a Northern California firm known for its work in sustainable architecture. He taught architecture and design at the University of California, Berkeley, for over 30 years, inspiring a new generation to create buildings and communities that are sensitive to place, climate, and the flow of human interactions. Appointed California State Architect in the 1970s by then-Governor Jerry Brown, Van der Ryn introduced the nation's first energy-efficient government building projects. His vision and persuasive skills heralded a golden age of ecologically sensitive design and resulted in the adoption of strict energy standards and disability access standards for all state buildings and parks. As the author of six groundbreaking books about planning and design, including Sustainable Communities (1986, with Peter Calthorpe), Ecological Design (1996, with Stuart Cowan) and numerous articles, Van der Ryn has helped inspire architects to see the myriad ways they can apply physical and social ecology to architecture and environmental design.
