From Krishna to Christ is a memoir of a young womans heartrending experiences of subjugation to the will of men in her family and the Hindu society, and the breaking of the shackles of bondage into the light of freedom. It is a story of her journey and slow transformation from being a servile Hindu woman and worshiping Hindu gods of clay namely Krishna, Shiva and Ram, to her faith and trust in Jesus Christ, and finally emerging as a mature and enlightened woman in spite of the difficulties and persecutions she faced in following Jesus. The story starts from her childhood, from the day she encountered Christ in the form of a picture, and ends with her coming to Bethany Theological Seminary in the United States, and dedicating her life totally to God by serving as pastor in Panora Church of the Brethren.

John P. Jones' "India's Problem, Krishna or Christ" is an interesting look at the multiculturalism of India during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At a time when English colonialism aimed to impart Christianity on the people of India, Hinduism faced the threat of disappearing. When many Indians might have felt torn between which faith to follow, Jones describes such a conflict that is important to read for a better understanding of this tense time in history.

Way back in the year 2005 when we met in New York at the First International Conference on Early Christianity in India the scholarship that were present felt that we have discovered the secret of the history after a long period of research into the history of the Language of Sanskrit and the history of the religion today known as Hinduism. My study in this area appeared in the Souvenir of the Conference which I thought was a ground breaking work and was wondering how with all the historic realities and documentary and archeological evidences why no one else thought about this earlier. So when I stumbled on the Christ vs., Krishna by Sakes written over 120 years ago I was clean flabbergasted. How could such a clear understanding of realities remained hidden to the scholarship for such a long time?

A ground-breaking work in comparative theology. This stimulating work of comparative theology brings into conversation the stories of the infancy and youth Jesus with that of Krishna in the Hindu tradition. The early chapters tell the stories, first of Krishna and then of Jesus, and then describe the role each plays as savior for the faithful of that tradition. Through this comparison Largen demonstrates the unique role Jesus' nature as both human and divine has in our Christian understanding of salvation.

At the core of most religions lies a transcendent being, someone out of the ordinary that challenges our limited human mind to expand to unknown heights. It is the presence of this being that gives people hope, proof even, that God is real. Through these individuals, God becomes something tangible, experiential and not just an abstract idea. Volume 2 of the Christ & Krishna set highlights and dives deep into the lives of two such extraordinary beings, namely Jesus Christ and Sri Krishna. Using the stories of the Bhagavatam and the Bible, the author draws comparisons and similarities in their lives and teachings, bringing clarity to the nature of God, His relationships with His devotees and His impact on the world. Through the window of these lives, we can clearly see Divine purpose, Divine power and Divine Love in action. Reading this book will inspire real devotion, not to an idea, or an institution, but rather to the essence and core of all spiritual paths: God Himself.

The reader who accepts as divine the prevailing religion of our land may consider this criticism on “The Christ” irreverent and unjust. And yet for man’s true saviors I have no lack of reverence. For him who lives and labors to uplift his fellow men I have the deepest reverence and respect, and at the grave of him who upon the altar of immortal truth has sacrificed his life I would gladly pay the sincere tribute of a mourner’s tears. It is not against the man Jesus that I write, but against the Christ Jesus of theology; a being in whose name an Atlantic of innocent blood has been shed; a being in whose name the whole black catalogue of crime has been exhausted; a being in whose name five hundred thousand priests are now enlisted to keep “Truth forever on the scaffold, Wrong forever on the throne.” Jesus of Nazareth, the Jesus of humanity, the pathetic story of whose humble life and tragic death has awakened the sympathies of millions, is a possible character and may have existed; but the Jesus of Bethlehem, the Christ of Christianity, is an impossible character and does not exist. From the beginning to the end of this Christ’s earthly career he is represented by his alleged biographers as a supernatural being endowed with superhuman powers. He is conceived without a natural father: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When, as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost” (Matt. i, 18). His ministry is a succession of miracles. With a few loaves and fishes he feeds a multitude: “And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men” (Mark vi, 41–44). He walks for miles upon the waters of the sea: “And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray; and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea” (Matt. xiv, 22–25). He bids a raging tempest cease and it obeys him: “And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.... And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark, iv, 37–39). He withers with a curse the barren fig tree: “And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee, henceforth, forever. And presently the fig tree withered away” (Matt. xxi, 19).

The purpose of this book is to make you aware of many different philosophical and religious approaches to the divine consciousness. The truth lies beyond all these aspects of understanding. There is a process that a person can embark on that will reveal the real and disperse the illusion. The race of mankind is on the path to understand himself, but is distracted continually until one begins to strive with diligence to return to your Godself.

This book shows the common teachings of Jesus Christ and Lord Krishna. When we look at Hinduism and Christianity we find totally different ideologies with different doctrines and different gods. But when I studied Bible, I found striking similarities between the teachings of Jesus Christ and Hinduism. In this book I have tried to show those similarities by putting the teachings of Jesus and Krishna together. It is not my intention to show Jesus as a Hindu Guru, I don’t know if He had visited India or not. I have just tried to show that the Consciousness of humanity is same everywhere and prophets of different time and place have expressed the same reality about it. - Saurabh
