BOOK EXCERPT:

In Give Peace a Chance, the distinguished Dr. Hamburg teams up with his filmmaker son to tell the story of selected significant peace achievements over the past 25 years. Including lessons from personal experience, pithy quotes from interviews with international dignitaries, and the insights of a documentary sensibility, this book reflects upon striking moments in peace history and inflects them with the perspective of preventive medicine. From Jane Goodall's rainforest research station, to a hostage taking in Eastern Africa, to the Reagan-Gorbachev post-summit epiphany in Reykjavik, the Hamburgs take us there. They then distill the wisdom of these and many other encounters into an essential "six pillars of prevention"-education, early action, democracy building, socioeconomic development, human rights, and arms control. These six pillars are essential not only to reflections upon the past, but to future prospects emerging from recent challenges to peace-the Arab Spring, the violent repression in Syria, and the brewing faceoff with Iran. Features of this engaging text: Combines personal experience(including involvement in a hostage rescue mission) with ongoing research in a variety of areas over 50+ years. Includes feature quotes and vignettes from international figures including Kofi Annan, Sam Nunn, and Hillary Clinton, among many others. Builds upon six key pillars of prevention: education, early warning, democracy, development, human rights, and arms control. Concludes with prescriptions for peace action in four key areas: the US and Western democracies, the UN, the EU, and NATO. Offers carefully selected Recommended Readings for every chapter. Give Peace One More Chance

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Anthony Tihamer Komjathy grew up in a small Hungarian town, Satoraljaujhely, which was divided into a Czechoslovakian half and a Hungarian half. The author became interested in the history of Eastern Europe at a young age and has devoted much of his life to examining the treaties and events which have defined geographic and political situations throughout the Eastern countries. Give Peace One More Chance! compares the treaties following both WWI and WWII. Komjathy discusses the failure of the treaties and explains that they disregarded the moral principle of national self-determination. He looks at the use of force intended to "preserve" peace and the demands, especially those of the Hungarians, to rectify the dishonesty and manipulation imposed upon them. Komjathy interprets the implications of revisions of the Munich Agreement, the First and Second Vienna Awards and the re-annexation of Ruthenia by Hungary and then, after WWII, the serious consequences of Stalin's (and the Allied Powers') condemnation of the treaties. Komjathy seeks to revise the 1947 Parisian treaty in order to prevent the repetition of such calamities in the Danube Valley. He not only points out existing dangers, but also suggests very useful solutions. Contents: The First Vienna Award; Reunion of Hungary and Ruthenia; The Second Vienna Award; Comparison of Tranon and Paris Treaty; Conclusions and Suggestions; Epilogue; Appendixes: Agreement Between Hungary and Croatia; The Munich Agreement; Letter of the Hungarian Ambassador; Bibliography; List of Maps.

Shadow On The White House

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Harry Truman's administration began searching for an American response to the clash in Indochina between Frech colonialism and Vietminh communism in 1945. Thirty years and five administrations later, Gerald Ford and his aides tried unsuccessfully to solicit additional aid for South Vietnam from a reluctant Congress. For Truman, Ford, and every American leader in between, the dilemma in Vietnam hung ominously over the presidency. In Shadow on the White House, seven prominent historians examine how the leadership of six presidents and an issue that grew into a difficult and often unpopular war shaped each other. Focusing on the personalities, politics, priorities, and actions of the presidents as they confronted Vietnam, the authors consider the expansion of presidential power in foreign-policy formulation since World War II. In their analyses, they chronicle the history of executive leadership as it related to Vietnam, assess presidential prerogatives and motives on war and peace issues, and clarify the interconnection between the modern presidency and the nation's frustrating, tragic, and humiliating failure in Southeast Asia. Although other histories have been written about the Vietnam experience, this book is the first systematic and comparative survey on presidential leadership as it relates to the war issue. It is organized by presidential administrations, giving a detailed examination of each president's decisions and policies. Based on the most recently opened archival sources, the essays provide a framework on which to hang the kaleidoscopic events of the war. -- Amazon.com.
