God S Big Bang

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

God's Big Bang presents a short history of science starting with the Greek scientists of the sixth century B.C.E. and moving forward through the twentieth century A.D. The accomplishments of these brilliants minds are expressed in simple terms by a brief textual description or with an algebraic depiction. Because science is accumulative, it is important to have a background in these foundational sciences before moving on to the complication science of the Big Bang theory. Taking the unique approach of using Laplace's probability theory to show that the chances of random generation for the universe without intelligent design are infinitesimally small, God's Big Bang provides a new look at the creation of the universe and the world we live in.

Searching For God

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The authors of Searching for God: Study Partners Explore Contemporary Jewish Texts introduce “self-directed hevruta,” a novel twist on the traditional Jewish path of in-depth learning with a study partner. Together, they choose the most challenging topic of all, searching for God, and explore five contemporary Jewish texts that present several approaches: mysticism, rationalism, nontraditional Judaism, metaphors from science, and character development. These spiritual seekers are lay-people. Joan Burstyn is an historian and poet; Gershon Vincow is a scientist and community leader. They study, discuss, teach each other, and draw conclusions. The result of this study partnership is a transformative learning experience about Judaism and the search for God. “This touching and inspiring account of the commitment of two friends to study texts and share their insights with each other on behalf of their own, and each other’s connection to holiness could well be titled Thinking as a Spiritual Path. Celebrating intellect as an instrument of prayer, this book will serve as a template for seekers across religious traditions who long for a spiritual practice that satisfies their minds as it gladdens their hearts.” —Sylvia Boorstein, author of Happiness Is an Inside Job: Practicing for a Joyful Life. “This book successfully probes the most basic questions anyone should ask: What do I mean when I use the word ‘God’? And how does the answer affect the way I live?” —Edward D. Zinbarg, board member, Jewish Theological Seminary Rabbinical School; author of Faith, Morals and Money: What the World’s Religions Tell Us about Ethics in the Marketplace.

The Big Bang And Relative Immortality

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This series of brief and sparkling philosophical essays explores the Principle of Continuity as it impacts discussions of the Big Bang and the expansion of the universe, God, infinity, biological immortality and evolution. From Ancient Greece to the frontiers of modern science, some egregious blunders have been made in both philosophy and in theoretical physics. The old theory of Continuous Creation was blown up by the Big Bang theory, but the author shows that this is just another ontological quagmire that conflicts with the First Law of Thermodynamics (conservation)OCoand common sense. Surveying scientific principles, he discerns where they can and cannot illuminate our understanding."

God S Cops

BOOK EXCERPT:

First lets look at the Hoyle comparison: a typical Boeing 747-400 has about 6 million parts. The typical human genome is an organisms complete set of DNA. Genomes vary widely in size: the smallest known genome for a free-living organism (a bacterium) contains about 600,000 DNA base pairs, while human and mouse genomes have some 3 billion. Except for mature red blood cells, all human cells contain a complete genome. DNA in the human genome is arranged into 23 distinct chromosomes--physically separate molecules that range in length from about 50 million to 250 million base pairs (Unknown, 2011). Lets say despite the fact that people have three billion base pairs that are aligned perfectly and a 747 is only 6 million parts, but for purposes of this discussion lets say that we are only as complex as the 747. OK, here is the problem: first, a 747 was designed, without designers and builders there would be no 747. Remember the analogy I gave of removing the distributor cap from a car and throwing it at the engine and then expecting it to run? You and I have consciousness and we can build a 747. A 747 does not have consciousness and cant build a human. In fact, we are far more sophisticated than a 747 and we cant build a human from the ground up yet. Now detractors would say of course you can build a 747 because you have many more parts that comprise you that make you and you are an intelligent being. All true making me more complex than a 747 and thus more likely to have been designed than the 747, and we all know the 747 was designed. Not just designed by someone in a garage to get us by, engineered to stringent standards taking into account all the forces, stresses and elements it was going to encounter on Earth. Now remember: you are expected to believe that this thing (the 747) that was engineered and is less sophisticated than you are came about by engineering, but you who is realistically at least eight times more complex came about by random chance and mutation. Has anybody ever seen a Cessna randomly mutate into a 747? If we go around randomly killing Cessnas, will they mutate into F-18s so they can get away or fight back? You can argue faster Cessnas might survive more often than slower Cessnas but they are all still Cessnas. However, the faster Cessnas will only survive if they are piloted by people. Further, if we squeeze more and more people into the Cessna that still wont make it a 747. The Earth is covered over by 75% water. Why not 30%? Why not 100%? Because of the oceans we have are perfect amount of salt to produce the right amount of rainfall, otherwise Earth would either be a desert or a water world. The Earth is covered by salt water over the majority of its surface, water that is undrinkable to humans. Were it not for the formation of vast amounts of freshwater, we would not be here. Why is there any freshwater? Why isnt it all freshwater? The Earths composition allows for human life to survive in every location upon it naturally with the exception of Antarctica. Remember one thing from the first time you boiled water: salt water freezes at a lower temperature and boils at a lower temperature. This means salt water evaporates at a lower temperature. If the oceans were all fresh water there would be a lot less water vapor in the air and less rain. In order to have more water vapor in a world with freshwater oceans you would need more of it to be exposed to the sun, which means more of the planet would need to be water. It seems we have just the right balance of salt water and salinity of that salt water to make rain, and just the right balance of freshwater to survive. The Earth might well roll around on its axis but for a single large moon to stabilize its orbit and provide tidal changes. If the oceans had been bigger the tidal effect would have been greater and much of the life that relies on tides would not exist. The Earth has an atmosphere that protects us from radiation and keeps

The Mytholgy Of God

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Man has been creating gods for the last 40 000 years in order to make sense of himself and to explain life as it was primitively perceived before science developed, knowledge expanded and with it our factual understanding of where we come from, who we are and how we came to be here on our little blue planet. Not a single god had anything to do with creating you or anything at all for that matter. Not even your god, the one you were brought up and indoctrinated with. This book is an attempt to firstly explain how the universe was formed. How planets, and eventually us, evolved over a period of 13.73 billion years based on facts, derived from science, verified, peer-reviewed and corroborated and by also coming to the same conclusions using vastly different methods as opposed to creationist fairytales and superstition. If you understand the basics of evolution, then the second part in which Islam and Christianity are exposed for what they are, may give you some perspective of how ‘religion poisons everything’, in the words of the late great Christopher Hitchens. This book, is not only a consciousness raiser regarding the delusion that religion imposes and the biblical past and current violence it perpetually perpetrates, despite its desperate claims to the contrary, but also hopefully, will help to eradicate its theocratically, skewed fundamentalism where extremism finds its wings. It’s a book about truth. It is about morality and intellectual honesty and unveiling the mask of religion and exposing the delusion of blind faith through reason. Exposing these religions with their ‘cult like’ delusional inaccuracies cannot be underestimated. Our future, as a species, depends on it. In the words of Stephen Roberts: ‘When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.’ Put your belief in people and love. Imaginary gods do not deserve them. Quote “The amount of research that went into this book is prodigious – exceeding what I have seen in volume and scope in all of the PhD theses that I edited over the years!”Editor’s comment.
