Ten years ago, Liyana Dhamirah was in a precarious situation: at 22, she was heavily pregnant and had no place to call home. For Liyana, home was often unstable. Once a bright teenager full of optimism, she faced uncertainty and found no support from family, government agencies and welfare groups. She had nowhere to go, no one to turn to. When she started living on a beach in Sembawang, she discovered a community of people — families — who were homeless just like her. They stuck together and watched out for each other, even when there were raids. She learned that in prosperous Singapore, the homeless are not always identifiable by appearance alone. Months later, journalists eventually uncovered Liyana’s story and how she navigated a bureaucracy of obstacles. Today she is a successful entrepreneur and this is her memoir.

In this book titled “Cities in the Memory of the Homeless,” it was a real practice for years throughout the journey, discovering places, understanding the culture of others, and then writing about them and their manifestations. My story began in Sudan on a refugee journey through Cairo towards Australia, and from there I set off to different countries around the world. I chose this title to initially reflect the journey of refugees and their hardships during their arduous journeys. Hence, the title came as “Cities in the Memory of the Homeless.” Here, displacement does not mean living without a home but rather the journey of seeking refuge and leaving the homeland for foreign lands. In it, I narrated my adventures and delved into the geography of cities, their ancient civilizations, tourist attractions, and historical and cultural places. I wrote in a modern style different from the old stereotypical image used by travelers in ancient times. I addressed the stories of those who sail into the unknown on boats of death, warning against illegal migration. Within this book, there are numerous journeys that I documented over twenty years, where I discussed many events that happened to me.

I was counted among the homeless for about a year in Austin, Texas, so there are a number of memoirs of those days in some of the poems within the book. I didn’t want to name it something ordinary. I wanted to be honest with the reader so that they wouldn’t bring home a book that they might not enjoy. I want the reader to know about and be prepared for sections about the homeless life. The rest of the poems are simply about the regular joys and sorrows of this life.

Ngoma successfully manoeuvres between the two, without the slightest crisis, for a while. He seeks balance between God and girls, work and pleasure, learning and mischief. While life can be well salted, it can also be bitter. Jealousy rises and he discovers who matters and who doesn t. His life brings together the bearableness and unbearableness of belonging, of being in love and being free, of...

Homeless connections is a story based on a young girl called Hope who suffers from a mental health disorder. She has been plagued her whole life seeing a man who isn't there and never truly feeling like she belonged anywhere. After the disappearance of her younger sister the blame was thrown her way and Hope ran away finding comfort and acceptance within a homeless community. Now with the support and love she has dreamed of can this help her to find a way back home to the life she desires or will her imagination take all this away and lead her to the bridge to end it all.

The featured stories are based on interviews with homeless women living on the streets of Springfield, Illinois. The author provides a platform for these women to tell their personal stories while offering a look into "a day in the life of a homeless woman." While this work will appeal to those in sociology or social work, there are vital lessons in empathy to be learned by everyone. The book contains an introduction by Dr. Kay Young McChesney, an Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Springfield.
