BOOK EXCERPT:
Wildlife tourism, of which game farms form an important part, is one of South Africa's biggest tourism products with more game conserved and land under protection than all provincial and national parks combined. Therefore wildlife tourism, especially hunting, is a very important source of income for the country and contributes to job creation in rural provinces like Limpopo, Northern Cape, North West and Eastern Cape. This book places emphasis on hunting (trophy and biltong), game farm development for tourism purposes, game management, game farming and the law, and important future trends. The book is aimed at game farm owners, hunters, hunting outfitters, professional hunters and students in search of knowledge concerning game farm and hunting tourism.

BOOK EXCERPT:
When it comes to environmental conservation and sustainable development initiatives in tropical forests, indigenous peoples are key players. They have been described often as either conservationists or destroyers of biodiversity. The position adopted on this matter is important because it guides the design and implementation of conservation strategies. The central question about what makes indigenous peoples conserve or degrade biodiversity, however, has posed a significant challenge, particularly in light of widespread trends such as cultural change, market expansion, and greater diversification of livelihoods. The reasons why indigenous communities end up degrading or conserving natural resources are addressed in a comprehensive yet accessible manner in this book, filling a critical gap in current knowledge about the socioeconomic drivers of biodiversity loss, and the rise of community-based conservation, using the hunting trends and conservation efforts of the Wachiperi for this analysis. Readers could greatly benefit from the lessons provided in this book about achieving both socioeconomic development and biodiversity conservation by engaging indigenous communities in a sustainable manner.

The Culture of Hunting in Canada covers elements of the history of hunting from the pre-colonial period until the present in all parts of Canada and features essays by practitioners and scholars of hunting and by pro- and anti-hunting lobbyists. The result crosses the boundaries between scholarship and personal reflection, and between academia and advocacy. Topics include hunting identities; conservation and its relationship to hunting; tensions between hunters and non-hunters and between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal hunting groups; hunting ethics; debates over hunting practices and regulations; animal rights; and gun control. This book makes an unprecedented contribution to the study of hunting in Canada and its role in our culture.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This Bill contains provisions, applicable to England and Wales, i) to end the hunting of wild animals with dogs, except where it is carried out in accordance with the conditions of an exemption as specified in schedule 1; and ii) to ban all hare coursing events. The Bill is identical in substance to the Government Bill brought from the Commons on 10/07/2003 (HL Bill 95, session 2002-03; ISBN 0108404773) which was blocked in the House of Lords, but the Government has said it will use the Parliament Act to force this Bill into law, if necessary. The Bill is due to come into force three months after it receives Royal Assent. Although hare coursing will be banned immediately on commencement, it is thought likely the implementation of the ban on hunting with dogs will be delayed to take account of its implications for hunting-related employment and the dispersal or rehoming of dogs.
