Malignant Hyperthermia

BOOK EXCERPT:

A HISTORY OF MALIGNANT HYPERTHERMIA Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a hereditary disorder of muscle. Undoubtedly, individuals have possessed this trait since time immemorial. However, because the trait is usually only unmasked in the presence of potent inhalational anaesthetic agents or non-depolarizing skeletal muscle relaxants, the existence of malignant hyperthermia was not suspected until we" after the dawn of the modern anaesthetic era. In the early years of ether and chloroform anaesthesia, monitoring was minimal. Body temperature was never measured. A finger on the pulse, and observation of respirations and skin colour were the most that could be expected. Death was not infrequent and usually unexplained (1). By the beginning of the twentieth century, reports of fulminant fever and tachycardia (rapid heart rate) during or immediately after anaesthesia often ending in death, were being described with increasing frequency in the medical literature (2-6). As a number of cases from New York had occurred during summer months, they were initially thought to be a form of heat stroke due to overly hot operating theatres (2-6). However, one enterprising anaesthetist (5:' checked the weather reports for the days on which some of these so called "heat strokes" had occurred. He found that on the days i'n question the ambient 0 temperature had never been in excess of 72 F. Environmental heat, therefore, could not have been a cause of at least some of these reactions.

Interstitial Hyperthermia Physics Biology And Clinical Aspects

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the last decade the use of interstitial microwave antennas to deliver localized and controlled power to deep-seated tumours has been explored in institutes around the world. Simultaneously the field of brachytherapy also progressed as clinicans began to develop new implantation approaches for a variety of tumour sites, thereby promoting the insertion of catheters which could serve as conduits for the insterstitial microwave applicators. Although the challenges presented by deep-seated tumours have not been solved, the developments in the field of brachytherapy and the implantation of interstitial applicators for hyperthermia are such that a volume dedicated to this approach is warranted. This third volume in the series "Hyperthermia and Oncology" provides insight in and updated information on various aspects of interstitial hyperthermia. It aims to serve as a guide for clinicians who are either already working in the field or who wish to implement this treatment. It also provides basic aspects to physicists and biologists who are interested in the field of hyperthermic treatment.

Neurobiology Of Hyperthermia

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The effects of global warming on human health factors with special regards to our brain function are still not well understood. There is an urgent need to expand our knowledge on the effects of hot environment on our brain functions in healthy and in diseased populations. It is still unclear whether infectious events, traumatic injuries, metabolic diseases, carcinogenic events, cardiovascular and respiratory functions will be adversely affected by the rise in global temperature or whether environmental pollutants, such as nanoparticles entered into our body system will produce more damage at high ambient temperatures. This book aims to answer these questions based on recent research carried out by top experts in the field from the USA (11 chapters), Europe (8) chapters), the Middle East (3 chapters), Asia (2 chapters) and Canada (1). These chapters are written in review style and embedded with the author’s new and original data in relation to the current knowledge in the field. The book is highly interesting to the first time readers, beginners and students alike as well as provides in-depth knowledge to the professionals. In addition, prospects for future research and recommendations are clearly indicated in each chapter for future growth of the subject in this highly emerging new discipline. Describes the importance of brain temperature and hyperthermia in disease processes Presents research on the first observations on Nanoparticles that worsen the outcome of hyperthermia Discusses the effects of hyperthermia on the blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers

Cancer Management In Man Chemotherapy Biological Therapy Hyperthermia And Supporting Measures

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book represents a comprehensive description and evaluation of the most up-to-date approaches to cancer management. Each chapter, prepared by leading basic researchers and clinicians, provides an in depth description of a specific method for cancer management. The chemotherapy section of the book is updated to include the newest drugs as well as those currently in development. Organized by drug class, this section provides the latest information on most drugs, including their mechanisms of action, interactions with other agents, toxicities, side effects, and mechanisms of resistance. The biological therapy section of the book provides expanded coverage of the currently used cytokines, vaccines, and cell based therapies of cancer. Full consideration is also given to other modern treatment approaches, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, inhibitors of tumor angiogenesis, and the transcatheter management of cancer. Current advances in hyperthermia in cancer treatment, hematologic and nutritional support, bone marrow transplantation, pain management and care of the terminally ill patients with cancer are also presented. In summary, this book provides a comprehensive coverage of the current knowledge on the most innovative, systematic and multidisciplinary approaches to the treatment of patients with cancer.
